A culture of kindness

When did you feel you had a direct experience of being in a culture of kindness in Shambhala and what it was that made you experience that kindness?

?Shambhala seems to be changing with the warmth of the Sakyong. There is a need to reduce things to the simplest elements, like kindness. Maybe these vows are one step along that path.?

A lack of kindness

When have you felt you were definitely not part of a culture of kindness in Shambhala?and what made you feel this way? What could you do to make sure others do not have that experience?

?I had tears coming up because I remember that situation so clearly. For me the most painful part of feeling things weren?t kind was when some sangha members had ideas which they expressed about how other members should embody compassion or basic goodness. Those kind of dialogues became very divisive ? it wasn?t so much about how we were relating to the individuals, but how we related amongst ourselves. I think since then we have matured. The second situation there was less ?should-ing?. We?re on a path, and I feel a sense of progression, development of our ability to embody basic goodness.?

Shambhala in society

How are you bringing the Shambhala teachings and practice into your life and work in society?

Being a parent in Shambhala ? there is a feeling of disconnect between the family and Shambhala?s long programs and parenting as a bodhisattva practice, and the family as the centre of society. In some ways, the children are the future of humanity, and I have some sense that the children are not part of the Mandala. As a leader, this conversation can be between the child and others and being the children into the centre in some way and dissolve barriers between secular life and Shambhala life. Childcare should not be an afterthought. How can this be beneficial to children and teens??
