May 30th, 2012

The family of Connecticut tile setter who died from mesothelioma cancer was awarded $2.4 million in its lawsuit against a tile manufacturer. A jury awarded the family of Hannibal Saldibar $1.6 million and the judge added an additional $800,000 in punitive damages after Saldibar contracted and died from mesothelioma in 2010.

Saldibar worked in the construction industry as a tile setter for 30 years, where he routinely used mortar containing asbestos supplied from the Tile Council of North America. The jury found the Tile Council liable for Saldibar?s asbestos exposure and mesothelioma diagnosis.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer directly linked to asbestos exposure. The disease can take decades to develop, and most commonly affects the lungs and abdominal cavity. Mesothelioma cancer affects thousands of workers every year.
