York Common Cents | Want to use a stability ball for an office chair ...
Here I am trying a stability ball at my office desk to stay fit at work!
Are you interested in rolling out a stability ball in place of a desk chair at your office? Benefits to using a Swiss ball or exercise ball instead of a desk chair can include better posture, stronger core muscles and balance improvement.
In fact, the effort used to held yourself upright on a stability ball can help you burn extra calories while you?re typing. In a study done at State University of New York Buffalo, researchers found that people who sat on stability balls burned 4.1 times more calories per hour than those who sat in an office chair. This kind of small change adds up to more than 160 additional calories burned each week and 640 additional calories burned each month!
Researchers also found that there was no difference in energy expenditure between sitting on a stability ball and simply standing. This is crucial considering that the more hours a day you sit, the greater your likelihood of dying an earlier death is, regardless of how much you exercise or how lean you are. Adding any type of physical activity to a sedentary job is a step, or a roll (if you?re using a stability ball), in the right direction.
Do you know how to use a stability ball as an office chair?
I recently tried using a stability ball for an office chair. And I ended up getting schooled on ergonomics from Donna Mandl, our benefits coordinator here at the York Daily Record. Donna has taken courses on ergonomics and studied it in the past. She gave me a couple of tips about finding the right stability for sitting at my desk. You can check out what happened below:
Get a big stability ball
The most interesting thing I learned in my one-day experiment in using a stability ball as my desk chair was that even if you are short, you need a bigger stability ball to have proper height at your desk. Most desks aren?t made for short people after all, and you need to make sure you are high enough for proper posture. The stability ball I bought for myself is too small to use at my desk. That?s OK, I can just use it at home to watch TV and get out a couple of crunches during commercial breaks!
Have a ball
Buy a stability ball chair specifically designed for desk work from Gaiam.
Most stores with fitness or health sections have stability balls, including Target and Walmart. Balls can be priced anywhere from $10 and up. You can also buy one for your particular height, like I did, but remember you need a bigger one for actual desk use. You can also buy a stability ball chair, if you have a little extra money to spend. The stability ball chair offers slightly more support if you?re afraid of falling or losing your balance.
