Officials probe brake failure in Canada train explosion

Meanwhile there was anger among local residents after it was revealed that local firefighters had earlier been called out to put out a blaze on part of the train. It was unclear whether their actions could be linked to the derailment.

Some 40 people remained missing on Monday and the local morgue had reserved 28 spaces for potential victims, as emergency workers were forced to stay away from much of the blast site due to intense heat and the possibility of further explosions.

Five bodies have been found after the driverless train, which was holding crude oil, derailed and blew up in the small town outside Quebec in Canada.

Yet several members of the 6,000-resident lakeside town have told reporters they are convinced that many more people were killed, amid fears that bodies may have been vapourised by the flames.

Police have been unable to examine much of the area destroyed by a gigantic fireball, including a music bar popular among young people. They were expected to be able to enter the site after the last fires were extinguished on Monday.

Genevieve Guilbault, a spokesman for the local coroner?s office, told The Toronto Star that 28 of the 150 spots in the morgue had been set aside due to fears the death toll would rise.

?I?ve learned some families have lost up to four people in this accident,? Claude Charron, whose pharmacy was destroyed in the blast, told CTV. ?There are some people that my friends know that haven?t been found yet,? added Zeph Kee. ?It?s devastating.? Jo-Annie Lapointe told The Toronto Star that she feared for her cousin, Andree-Anne Sevigny, and a colleague who was with her. ?They can?t find them,? she said.

A ?black box? data recorder from the train - comprising five locomotives and 72 oil cars - has been recovered by Canada?s Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the disaster.
