Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite hands-on at IFA 2012 (updated: video)

Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite handson video

Back in July, word got out that Huawei was prepping a revised version of its entry-level Android tablet, dubbed the MediaPad 7 Lite. As that name implies, this Android ICS tab's of the 7-inch variety and, thus, lends itself well to one-handed use for busy on-the-go types. Considering this isn't part of the outfit's top shelf portfolio, its mix of specs have been kept quite modest: there's a single-core 1.2GHz Cortex A8 CPU underneath that 1,024 x 600 IPS display. But before you knock it for falling short of even 720p territory, bear in mind this device's being marked at a 229 Euro price point -- so it's affordable and geared squarely for the budget segment.

Loaded up with a mostly stock version of Android 4.0.3 and global radios for 3G / WiFi, this humble tab's made for mobile use, as the OEM's VP of Euro operations assured us repeatedly. Performance-wise, its lack of a dual-core setup is heavily apparent, since there was a considerable lag between our touch input and onscreen effect. The tab also sports 8GB of internal storage, a rear 3.2-megapixel camera and VGA front facer -- helpful if you're out and about and want to video chat -- in addition to a 4,100mAh battery.

As for the MediaPad 7 Lite's build, well, it's a bit disappointing especially given the attractive design of the Nexus 7 which is comparably priced and higher specced. In all, it feels rather chunky in-hand, but it does feature a metallic back bordered by solid white plastic. It's set to be released this August in South Africa, China, Russia, Philippines and Taiwan, followed by Germany in October for 249 Euros. Check out our gallery below and head past the break for a video tour.

PFT: Edwards praises Wilson,?rips Sanchez

Jim-Irsay-APstoryJuly-4AP

The most recent episode of Hard Knocks was nearly as intriguing for what it included as for what it omitted.

The folks at NFL Films and HBO presumably exercised significant editorial discretion, ignoring any unflattering comments from Dolphins? management regarding the stream of tweets generated by Colts owner Jim Irsay regarding the brewing trade for cornerback Vontae Davis.? Those pieces of tape on the cutting-room floor would surely shed light on key issues, including how Irsay is perceived by the coaching staff and G.M. of another NFL team and, more importantly, whether and to what extent Irsay?s decision to tip his hand in excited fashion about a potential trade caused the Dolphins to put a thumb or two on the trade scale.

Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star recently authored a compelling critique of Irsay?s Twitter habit as it relates to strategic issues like potential trades.? Kravitz identifies two key problems.

?One, if the trade doesn?t get done, he?s teased the deal and the fans are left disappointed,? Kravitz writes, echoing far more eloquently concerns we raised over the weekend.? ?Everybody?s appetite had been whetted; if it hadn?t happened, fans would have been up in arms, not only wondering why it didn?t get done, but blaming Irsay for blowing up the deal with his impertinent tweets.

?Second, the tweets send a message to a potential trading partner: These guys are desperate to get something done. Now your trading partner knows you have?to get something done, or risk disappointing the local fan base.? If I?m Miami and I?m reading that ? and who doesn?t read Jim?s tweets ? I?m thinking, ?I can get what I want from the Colts, maybe an additional pick or something.??

Irsay decided to respond, via a three-part tweet:? ?I don?t mind my friend Crafty Kravitz constructive criticism, but 1) Saying TradeWindsBlowing with Grigs is like saying the sun will rise 2day 2) I?m always correcting ?Imagined? words people THINK they heard; I never said ?Blockbuster!? or ?Monster? trade..never said it once! 3) With 31 teams and 75-90 player rosters..that?s over 2500 players in play..hardly a shocking tip of the hand! It?s theater,it?s excitement.?

The third part contradicts the first.? Irsay tries to say that trade winds are always blowing with G.M. Ryan Grigson, which means that Irsay?s tweets regarding the blowing of trade winds should have been regarded with a shrug.? But then Irsay says that he did what he did for effect, in order to create excitement.

As to part 2, where Irsay says he never used words like ?Blockbuster!? or ?Monster,? his use of all caps and exclamation points and reference to ?given up high pick? for a ?SERIOUS Vet/Starter!? and his ?check book? is ready and ?this sh*t is HOT, STAY TUNED!? created the reasonable impression for a neutral observer that the owner viewed it as a big deal.? Which means that the fans should, too.

Unfortunately, Kravitz offered no take on the tweet that arguably created the biggest problems for Irsay?s image in Indyand beyond.? In response to criticism on Twitter, Irsay played the ?buy ur own team? card, underscoring the fact that he never actually bought a team, but inherited one.

It?s impossible to know whether Irsay?s tweets forced the team to give up more to get Davis.? But when considering what the Dolphins thought of the 2009 first-round pick, it?s likely that the deleted scenes from Tuesday night?s Hard Knocks would make Irsay wish he had deleted his tweets.? Or, better yet, that he had never sent them.

Hyundai Starting to Hog the U.S. Automotive Road | InvestorPlace

? ?

Popular Posts:

Recent Posts:

I can remember back in the late-1980s when driving a Hyundai was the epitome of un-cool. Well, things have certainly changed since then. Now, Hyundai?s are known for their style, quality, and affordability ? and even for being, dare I say it, ?cool.?

This is a development not lost on U.S. auto giants Ford (NYSE:F) and General Motors (NYSE:GM), or on the Japanese automakers Honda (NYSE:HMC) and Toyota (NYSE:TM). Even German behemoth Volkswagen AG (PINK:VLKAY) is likely watching Hyundai?s remarkable progress, and well it should.

Through the first half of 2012, Hyundai Group?s U.S. market share ? which includes Kia-brand vehicles ? held steady vs. the prior year?s six months. The company captured 8.87% of the market midway through 2012, down slightly from the 8.97% it garnered through the first six months of 2011. By comparison, the much larger Ford and GM saw their respective market share fall in the first half of the year, with Ford?s share sliding 1.21% to 15.68%, and GM?s share declining 1.83% to 18.09%. Hyundai also bested rival Nissan (PINK:NSANY) in market share, as well as Volkswagen.

Earlier this year, John Krafcik, chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America, announced that the company aims to increase its U.S. sales to 700,000 cars and sport-utility vehicles this year, which is a roughly 8% increase over the prior year. The only thing holding Hyundai back is the fact that its production facilities at the time were already running near full capacity. And while the company is reportedly contemplating adding more production facilities, a decline in demand from buyers in Europe has allowed Hyundai to ship some inventory originally intended for Europe back to the U.S.

To be certain, things haven?t been all roses for Hyundai, especially recently. The company?s exports stalled in July, down some 23% because of a labor dispute that has crippled production. According to the company, the total number of Hyundai and Kia vehicles made in July sank to 120,493, a big drop from the 156,200 units made in the previous month.

Here?s the money quote from the Hyundai statement as reported by the Wall Street Journal: ?U.S. dealerships for Hyundai and Kia had some difficulty meeting soaring demand due to a shortage of vehicles.? Moreover, the company said it had less than a month of inventory remaining as of Aug. 1. That?s well below the optimal inventory levels of 60 days.

The supply constraints caused by the strike in South Korean production facilities will likely take its toll on Hyundai and Kia sales, but whatever sales disruption takes place, it will likely be a mere bump in the road for the company. Once Hyundai settles the disputes and gets back on track with full production, the race with U.S., Japanese and German automakers will resume.

The long-term implications of Hyundai?s drive into the lead pack of top-selling automakers in the U.S. sales means an increasingly competitive marketplace for the likes of Ford and GM. It also means that to stay competitive, these companies likely will have to offer more discounts on more models, which will take an increasing bite out of profit margins.

To combat the loss of U.S. market share, Ford and particularly GM will have to search for market share outside the states. The only problem is that Europe is mired in recession, and the other big market, China, is having its own struggles with economic growth.

To be certain, the U.S. auto market is where it?s at for car makers, and any company making gains here at home is liable to cause an uncomfortable stir for those currently in the top spot. So, if you?re an investor in U.S. auto stocks, you better keep your eyes on the rearview mirror ? because Hyundai is catching up.

As of this writing, Jim Woods did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

[cre blog] NAR says national market is recovering at a slower pace ...

Lawrence Yun

The National Association of Realtors said today that the recovery in the national commercial real estate market is continuing, but at a much slower pace. Positive underlying fundamentals continue to support all of the major commercial real estate sectors, but a slowdown in job creation and ongoing tight loan availability has tempered growth in some areas.

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, said there are mixed results among the commercial sectors. ?Job creation in the second quarter was about half of what we saw in the first quarter, which is moderating demand in the office sector,? he said. ?Industrial and warehouse space is holding on better because imports and exports have advanced. While exports to Europe generally are down, trade has been robust with India, China and other Asian nations, along with Brazil, Mexico and our strongest trading partner ? Canada.?

Although still positive, dampened demand is slightly moderating rent growth with the exception of the multifamily market. ?Sharply higher demand for apartments is causing rents to rise at faster rates,? Yun said. ?A return to normal household formation will mean even lower vacancy rates and higher rents in the future.?

The current commercial real estate cycle has been driven by shifts in demand without an oversupply of new construction. ?The difficulty small businesses have in getting commercial real estate loans for leasing or purchase is keeping a lid on demand,? Yun explained. ?Multifamily is the only commercial sector with a notable growth in new space, with some lending provided through government loans.

With the exception of multifamily, vacancy rates remain above historic averages seen since 1999. Over that timeframe the typical vacancy rate has been 14.4 percent for the office market, 10.1 percent in industrial, 8.1 percent for retail and 5.8 percent in multifamily.

Vacancy rates are marginally declining and rents are modestly rising in all of the sectors, but significant changes in the outlook are unlikely before the end of the year. Many corporate decisions on spending and job hiring are on hold given uncertainty over the upcoming elections, whether Congress will effectively avoid a ?fiscal cliff,? and unsettled issues such as health care and banking/financial regulations.

?Overall companies hold plentiful cash reserves, but they are hesitant to hire without clarity over how these outstanding issues will impact the bottom line,? Yun said.

?Commercial real estate gains could be thwarted if lending from small and community banks dry up from excessive regulatory compliance costs, and if international big-bank capital rules are applied to smaller lending institutions,? Yun added.

NAR?s latest Commercial Real Estate Outlook offers projections for four major commercial sectors and analyzes quarterly data in the office, industrial, retail and multifamily markets. Historic data for metro areas were provided by REIS, Inc.,(2) a source of commercial real estate performance information.

Office Markets

Vacancy rates in the office sector are expected to fall from an estimated 16.1 percent in the third quarter to 15.6 percent in the third quarter of 2013.

The markets with the lowest office vacancy rates presently are Washington, D.C., with a vacancy rate of 9.4 percent; New York City, at 10.0 percent; and New Orleans, 12.8 percent.

Office rent is projected to increase 2.0 percent this year and 2.6 percent in 2013. Net absorption of office space in the U.S., which includes the leasing of new space coming on the market as well as space in existing properties, should be 24.1 million square feet in 2012 and 47.8 million next year.

Industrial Markets

Industrial vacancy rates are forecast to decline from 10.7 percent in the third quarter of this year to 10.5 percent in the third quarter of 2013.

The areas with the lowest industrial vacancy rates currently are Orange County, Calif., with a vacancy rate of 4.6 percent; Los Angeles, 4.8 percent; and Miami at 6.8 percent.

Annual industrial rent is likely to rise 1.7 percent in 2012 and 2.4 percent next year. Net absorption of industrial space nationally is seen at 59.8 million square feet this year and 67.2 million in 2013.

Retail Markets

Retail vacancy rates are projected to decline from 10.9 percent in the third quarter to 10.7 percent in the third quarter of 2013.

Presently, markets with the lowest retail vacancy rates include San Francisco, 3.8 percent; Fairfield County, Conn., 3.9 percent; and Long Island, N.Y., and Orange County, Calif., both at 5.3 percent.

Average retail rent is forecast to rise 0.8 percent this year and 1.3 percent in 2013. Net absorption of retail space should be 10.3 million square feet this year and 20.1 million in 2013.

Multifamily Markets

The apartment rental market ? multifamily housing ? is expected to see vacancy rates drop from 4.3 percent in the third quarter to 4.2 percent in the third quarter of 2013; vacancy rates below 5 percent generally are considered a landlord?s market with demand justifying higher rents.

Areas with the lowest multifamily vacancy rates currently are Portland, Ore., at 2.0 percent; New York City and Minneapolis, both at 2.2 percent; and New Haven, Conn., and San Jose, Calif., both at 2.4 percent.

Average apartment rent is likely to increase 4.1 percent in 2012 and another 4.4 percent next year. Multifamily net absorption should be 219,300 units this year and 236,600 in 2013.

Links between nutrients, genes and cancer spread documented

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? More than 40 plant-based compounds can turn on genes that slow the spread of cancer, according to a first-of-its-kind study by a Washington State University researcher.

Gary Meadows, WSU professor and associate dean for graduate education and scholarship in the College of Pharmacy, says he is encouraged by his findings because the spread of cancer is most often what makes the disease fatal. Moreover, says Meadows, diet, nutrients and plant-based chemicals appear to be opening many avenues of attack.

"We're always looking for a magic bullet," he says. "Well, there are lots of magic bullets out there in what we eat and associated with our lifestyle. We just need to take advantage of those. And they can work together."

Meadows started the study, recently published online in the journal Cancer and Metastasis Reviews, with some simple logic: Most research focuses on the prevention of cancer or the treatment of the original cancer tumor, but it's usually the cancer's spread to nearby organs that kills you. So rather than attack the tumor, said Meadows, let's control its spread, or metastasis.

He focused in particular on genes that suppress metastasis. As search engine terms go, it took him down many a wormhole in the PubMed research database, as the concept of nutrients and metastasis suppressor genes is rarely identified by journals. It's even an afterthought of some of the researchers who find the genes.

"People for the most part did not set out in their research goals to study metastasis suppressor genes," says Meadows. "It was just a gene that was among many other genes that they had looked at in their study."

But Meadows took the studies and looked to see when metastasis suppressor genes were on or off, even if original authors didn't make the connection. In the end, he documented dozens of substances affecting the metastasis suppressor genes of numerous cancers.

He saw substances like amino acids, vitamin D, ethanol, ginseng extract, the tomato carotenoid lycopene, the turmeric component curcumin, pomegranate juice, fish oil and others affecting gene expression in breast, colorectal, prostate, skin, lung and other cancers.

Typically, the substances acted epigenetically, which is to say they turned metastasis suppressor genes on or off.

"So these epigenetic mechanisms are influenced by what you eat," he says. "That may also be related to how the metastasis suppressor genes are being regulated. That's a very new area of research that has largely not been very well explored in terms of diet and nutrition."

Meadows says his study reinforces two concepts.

For one, he has a greater appreciation of the role of natural compounds in helping our bodies slow or stop the spread of cancer. The number of studies connecting nutrients and metastasis suppressor genes by accident suggests a need for more deliberate research into the genes.

"And many of these effects have not been followed up on," he says. "There's likely to be more compounds out there, more constituents, that people haven't even evaluated yet."

Meadows also sees these studies playing an important role in the shift from preventing cancer to living with it and keeping it from spreading.

"We've kind of focused on the cancer for a long time," he says. "More recently we've started to focus on the cancer in its environment. And the environment, your whole body as an environment, is really important in whether or not that cancer will spread."

Which Birth control Works Best? (Hint:It? s Not the Pill). Jonathan Nourok

Long-lasting contraceptives such as the intrauterine device (IUD) and implants are better at preventing pregnancy than more popular birth control methods, including the pill, patch and vaginal rings, a new study concludes.

The study involved 7, 486 women participating in the Contraceptive Choice Project, run by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis.The women, aged 14 to 45, were given their choice of contraception for free and then tracked for up to three years for unintended pregnancy. The results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that longer-lasting contraceptives were up to 20 times more effective ?? that is, women using IUDs, implants or hormone injections were up to 20 times less likely to get pregnant ?? after three years than the shorter-acting methods of birth control.

(MORE: Plan B:1 in 5 Pharmacists May Deny Eligible Teens Access to Emergency Contraception)

Among the 1, 500 women who chose to use birth control pills, patches or vaginal rings, 4.8% became pregnant after one year, compared with only 0.3% of the nearly 5, 800 women who chose IUDs or implantable contraceptives. After three years, 9.4% of women using short-acting contraceptives got pregnant, compared with 0.9% of those using longer-acting methods.

Women using hormone injections (a minority at 176) had even better success, with 0.1% becoming pregnant after one year and 0.7% becoming pregnant after three years.

The results, while striking, aren?t all that surprising, considering that shorter term options depend on consistent compliance to work most effectively:pills must be take daily and patches and rings must be replaced within days or weeks.

In contrast, IUDs, which are fitted into the uterus, last five or 10 years, depending on the device.Hormonal implants, which are surgically placed under the skin of the upper arm, are effective for three years. And injections last three months.

(MORE: The Pill at 50:Sex, Freedom and Paradox)

How well a birth-control method worked depended also on the age of the user:younger women, under 21, using pills, patches or vaginal rings were nearly twice as likely to become pregnant as older women who used the same contraceptives. Why? Because they were more likely to forget to take their pills or to change their patch or ring. There were no age-related differences in pregnancy rates among women using IUDs, implants or injections.

Overall, poorer women with less education were also more likely to experience contraceptive failures.

The researchers hope their results will prompt more women to consider using long-acting contraceptives to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Each year in the U.S., there are an estimated 3 million unplanned pregnancies, about 1.2 million of which lead to abortion, according to the study.About half of unintended pregnancies occur because of because of incorrect or inconsistent use of contraception, including condoms and birth-control pills.

Still, the pill is the most commonly used contraceptive in the U.S.That may be because women don? t hear about long-acting methods as often as other contraceptives, or because women are more comfortable taking a pill or using a patch than having a device implanted in their body.Another factor:cost.IUDs and implants are expensive and aren? t typically covered by insurance.

(MORE: Teen Sex Ed:Instead of Promoting Promiscuity, It Delays First Sex)

? Nationally, only about 5 percent are using long-lasting methods like IUDs and implants. We know one of the barriers to why they? re not using them more frequently is up-front costs, ? the study?s lead author, Dr.Brooke Winner of Washington University School of Medicine, told Reuters.?If [more] women were using these products nationally, there would be a very significant drop in unintended pregnancies, which would have far-reaching effects.?

While longer-lasting contraceptives can be more expensive up front, they may turn out to cost about the same as the pill when the expense is broken down by day, the researchers noted.IUDs and implants can be removed when women wish to become pregnant, and fertility typically returns immediately.

The researchers hope their study will also encourage doctors to consider IUDs and implants when discussing birth control with their patients.? If there were a drug for cancer, heart disease or diabetes that was 20 times more effective we would recommend it first, ? another study author, Dr.Jeffrey Peipert, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University, told the Wall Street Journal.

Armstrong says he's at peace after controversy

(AP) ? Lance Armstrong was feeling just fine even after being beaten by a lanky teenager in a grueling 36-mile mountain bike race.

Better than fine, even. He's more at ease now than he has been in a decade.

In his first interview since the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency disciplined Armstrong with a lifetime ban from professional cycling and vacated his seven Tour de France titles, he said, "Nobody needs to cry for me. I'm going to be great."

Armstrong couldn't catch Keegan Swirbul at the Power of Four bike race Saturday, finishing nearly five minutes behind the hard-charging kid.

"It's cool to get your butt kicked by a 16-year-old when you know he has a bright future," Armstrong said, smiling.

For a few hours, Armstrong was back in his element ? on a bike and in a race.

No controversies weighing him down, either.

The escape into the mountains around Aspen was almost refreshing. He took the time to enjoy a bright, blue day and soak in the scenery.

As for what lies ahead, Armstrong wasn't thinking that far ? only toward lunch. Armstrong chatted for a few minutes before saying, "OK, I'm going to go eat a cheeseburger."

Before leaving, though, he posed for pictures with the throng of fans that gathered at the base of a ski lift to watch the racers finish.

Asked if there was anything he would to say to his fans, the ones who've supported him through the controversy, he said: "I think people understand that we've got a lot of stuff to do going forward. That's what I'm focused on and I think people are supportive of that. It's great to be out here."

Decked out in black and gold and sporting a Livestrong emblem on his jersey, Armstrong tinkered with his bike and gave a kiss to girlfriend Anna Hansen before pedaling off. Hansen was waiting at the finish, too.

So were plenty of other members of the Armstrong entourage.

His busy weekend was supposed to include a trail marathon Sunday. But he told The Associated Press two hours later he was going to skip the race.

This competition simply took that much out of him. With good reason, given all the climbing the cyclists had to do.

And while Armstrong may be banned from cycling, it certainly hasn't diminished his passion for competition.

Only now, these weekend races may have to suffice.

"It's not so much about racing anymore for me," Armstrong said. "For me, it's more about staying fit and coming out here and enjoying one of the most beautiful parts of the world, on a beautiful day, on a very hard course. Some may say you're a little sick to spend your free time doing stuff like this. I had a good time."

So did Swirbul ? beating his idol was the highlight of his burgeoning career.

Or so he thought. Then came this: Armstrong saying Swirbul was a rider to keep an eye on down the road. Swirbul beamed as he stood next to Armstrong.

Swirbul hardly had the heart to tell Armstrong that he won with only one gear ? the rest going out early in the race.

"I'm so psyched right now," said Swirbul, who turns 17 on Sept. 2. "I wanted to win this race so bad."

How come?

"To beat the 7-time Tour champ," he said, grinning.

To riders such as Swirbul, Armstrong will always be champion of those Tour de France titles, no matter what rulings are made.

"It's just a bunch of bureaucrats causing trouble," said Max Taam, who trains with Armstrong and finished third Saturday. "I think he's just happy to move on and be out on his bike."

Armstrong, who retired a year ago and turns 41 next month, said Thursday he would no longer challenge USADA and declined to exercise his last option by entering arbitration. He denied again that he took banned substances in his career, calling USADA's investigation a "witch hunt" without any physical evidence.

USADA said its evidence came from more than a dozen witnesses "who agreed to testify and provide evidence about their firsthand experience and/or knowledge of the doping activity of those involved in the USPS conspiracy," a reference to Armstrong's former U.S. Postal Service cycling team.

The unidentified witnesses said they knew or had been told by Armstrong himself that he had "used EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone and cortisone" from before 1998 through 2005, and that he had previously used EPO, testosterone and Human Growth Hormone through 1996, USADA said. Armstrong also allegedly handed out doping products and encouraged banned methods ? and used "blood manipulation including EPO or blood transfusions" during his 2009 comeback race on the Tour de France.

USADA chief executive Travis Tygart described the investigation as a battle against a "win-at-all-cost culture," adding that the International Cycling Union was "bound to recognize our decision and impose it."

Fans defended Armstrong on Twitter, insisting his work with Livestrong trumps what he accomplished on a bike. His success helped sell millions of "Livestrong" yellow plastic bracelets as he promoted cancer awareness and research. He's raised nearly $500 million since the Lance Armstrong Foundation started in 1997.

On Friday alone, the foundation said it received 400 donations that totaled around $75,000.

There were plenty of fans wearing Livestrong hats and shirts in the crowd, cheering when he finished.

"I'm focused on the future. I've got five great kids, a great lady in my life, a wonderful foundation that's completely unaffected by any noise out there, and we're going to continue to do our job," Armstrong said. "The people like the people who are standing around here or on the course, they voiced their opinion in the last 48 hours and are going to support us."

As for the sport?

"There are a lot of good young guys. A lot of good young guys," Armstrong said. "Cycling is going to be fine."
