Kevin Love Shaves His Head For Breast Cancer Awareness ...

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ? In an expression of his support for October?s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, two-time NBA All-Star and Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love shaved his head as part of his ?Spreadlove? community outreach program.

Teaming up with four-time NFL All-Pro wide receiver and Arizona Cardinal Larry Fitzgerald, the two are spreading love and awareness in an effort to raise money for breast cancer.

An online video documenting Fitzgerald serving as Love?s barber, is now posted on YouTube. By sharing their experience with the social media community, the athletes have pledged to donate $0.25 for every ?retweet? on Twitter and ?like? or ?share? on Facebook and every ?view? on YouTube and every ?+1? from now until the end the end of the month.

Love and Fitzgerald will donate a total of up to $250,000 to their charities of choice, Bright Pink and American Cancer Society/ Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, respectively.

Love?s close friend Betty Goldie was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, and Fitzgerald lost his mother, Carol Fitzgerald, to breast cancer in 2003; so the two share a meaningful connection to the cause.

?This is a special campaign that is particularly close to my heart,? Love said. ?As an active member of the social media community, my hope is that Spreadlove will reach millions and encourage as many people as possible to support the cause. It just takes one click.?

Mass. pharmacy dodged reprimand after protest

BOSTON (AP) ? Massachusetts regulators in 2004 proposed a formal reprimand for a company now linked to deadly meningitis outbreak, but they never delivered it after the company protested the reprimand could be "fatal to the business."

The sanction by the Board of Registration in Pharmacy was included in a proposed consent agreement that was meant to resolve complaints against the New England Compounding Center in Framingham. The complaints included a failure to meet accepted standards for making the same steroid that's been connected to the outbreak.

The agreement was among documents released this week by the state Department of Health that provide more details about past incidents at NECC, which was shut down in the wake of the fungal meningitis outbreak that has reached 17 states, sickening 317 people, 24 of whom have died. Compounding pharmacies like NECC custom mix solutions in doses or forms generally not commercially available.

The state has now moved to revoke NECC's license, but the reprimand represents a missed opportunity to crack down on the lab years before the current outbreak.

The proposed consent agreement, sent to owner Barry Cadden for review in October 2004, included the reprimand and a three-year probationary period for the company's registration and Cadden's license.

In its response, the company's attorney wrote that the board's dealings with the company were "a success story" and a reprimand was unwarranted.

"The collateral consequences to many, if not all of NECC's 42 other licenses (to operate in other states), would be potentially fatal to the business," attorney Paul Cirel wrote.

"Such a catastrophe is clearly not the intended result of the Board's proposed reprimand, nor is it warranted in this case," Cirel wrote. "The Board's mandate is to protect the public health safety and welfare, not punish the licensees."

In a footnote, he wrote, "Once disclosed, the reprimand will surely result in inquiries/investigations in those other jurisdictions. Regardless of the derivative actions taken, the attendant legal and administrative costs will be devastating."

The case ended without disciplinary action as part of a different consent agreement reached with the board in 2006.

Cirel did not respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.

The 2006 agreement was signed under then-Gov. Mitt Romney's administration, but some members from that time remain on the pharmacy board.

Alec Loftus, a spokesman for the state's office of health and human services, said the state has expanded its investigation to include how the 2006 consent agreement was reached, including why the board never issued the reprimand and whether that was related to the protest from the company.

Loftus called the consent agreement "very troubling."

He added that the state was still compiling information on how frequently formal reprimands are given.

Loyd V. Allen Jr., editor of the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding, said the proposed three years' probation indicates the board considered the violations very serious. He said a plea from the company should have been irrelevant to the board's decision.

"Whether or not it's going to be hurtful or harmful to the business shouldn't really be the issue if patient safety is on the line," Allen said.

The pharmacy board recommended the reprimand after an investigation that followed a confidential report filed with a U.S. Food and Drug Administration district office in Stoneham in 2002. The report alleged that two patients had an unspecified "adverse effect" after taking an NECC compounded Betamethasone Repository Injection, a steroid used to treat joint pain and arthritis that's different from the one linked to the current meningitis outbreak.

An inspector's report, completed in March 2004 after numerous interactions between the state and NECC, said a toxin had been found in the drug and the company couldn't produce various records about the drug, including test results on its sterility. Similar problems have been uncovered in a preliminary investigation prompted by the outbreak, including failure to sterilize its products long enough and inadequate testing of its sterilization equipment.

The 2004 report also noted the FDA had notified the state pharmacy board in October 2002 about "a second incident" involving a drug the company had produced, methylprednisolone acetate, which is the same steroid linked to the outbreak.

The report offered no details about the second incident. But the FDA report to Massachusetts in 2002 came three months after New York resident William Koch became sick with bacterial meningitis after receiving an injection of the same steroid, made at NECC. He died as a result in 2004 and NECC later settled a lawsuit in the case.

A timeline of complaints against the company, released Monday among the Department of Public Health documents, showed only an October 2002 complaint involving that particular steroid, and the complaint originated in New York, where Koch lived.

The FDA said it could not give details about what it told the state in October 2002 and referred the AP to public records request forms.

The inspector's report said that a re-inspection of NECC showed it had corrected its problems by 2004. But the inspector cited previous concerns against the agency dating from 1999, and wrote: "It is this investigator's opinion that a formal reprimand should be issued."

PFT: NFL players union wants Tagliabue off bounty appeal

Pittsburgh Steelers v Cincinnati BengalsGetty Images

Steelers receiver Emmanuel Sanders gave the rest of the NFL a clear lesson in how to save a timeout by employing poor sportsmanship on Sunday night, faking an injury to give his team time to get the right personnel on the field.

With the Steelers facing third-and-11 with six minutes left in the game, Pittsburgh wanted to substitute but didn?t have time to do it without picking up a delay of game penalty. So Sanders ? one of the players who was supposed to come off ? simply fell to the ground pretending to be hurt, which caused a clock stoppage that allowed the Steelers to get the correct personnel on the field.

It was incredibly obvious that Sanders was faking, but it became ridiculously obvious when Sanders went right back on the field just one play later. NBC?s Cris Collinsworth and Al Michaels both noticed that Sanders was faking immediately, and Michaels noted that the league office might have something to say about it.

Based on what the league office has said in the past, Sanders should have to explain himself. Last season, when two Giants players obviously faked an injury in a game against the Rams, the NFL distributed a memo saying, in part, ?all those suspected of being involved in faking injuries will be summoned promptly to this office.?

Well, now Sanders is suspected of being involved in faking injuries. But NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told PFT that Sanders wasn?t summoned to the league office, or disciplined in any other way. However, the situation is still being reviewed by the league office.

As I wrote at the time of the Giants? fake injury controversy, faking injuries is a time-honored practice in football. It dates at least to 1953, when a Notre Dame team was dubbed the ?Fainting Irish? after faking an injury to get a free timeout that set up a tying touchdown on the last play of a game against Iowa. But the fact that fake injuries have been around for more than half a century doesn?t make them acceptable. And since the NFL has warned teams not to do it, there?s no reason for the NFL not to act now that Sanders has obviously done it.

It would stink to see the NFL become like soccer, where players are constantly flopping to the turf with phony injuries. But if the NFL doesn?t crack down, things could head in that direction. The example that Sanders set on Sunday night is clear: If you want a free timeout, just fake an injury. The referee and the league office won?t do anything about it.

Israel kills 3 militants after Qatari emir leaves Gaza

The Emir of Qatar has become the first head of state to visit Gaza since the Islamist group Hamas seized control five years ago. The visit reflects increasing ties between the Gulf state and the regime which is considered a terrorist group by the West. Lindsey Hilsum Channel Four Europe reports.

By Reuters

GAZA STRIP -- Israel killed three Hamas gunmen in Gaza Strip air strikes on Tuesday which the military said targeted squads preparing to launch rockets into the Jewish state.

The air force operations followed other Palestinian attacks, including a bomb blast that wounded an Israeli army officer patrolling the Gaza border, on a day that saw the isolated, Hamas-governed enclave receive its first foreign head of state, the emir of Qatar.

Israeli leaders had vowed retaliation for the morning bombing on Gaza's boundary fence, but Israeli television said military actions were put on hold until Qatar's Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani had left.

Palestinians mourn militants killed by Israeli air strikes in Gaza

The rich Persian Gulf state has had low-level diplomatic ties with Israel and hosts a major U.S. naval base.

Hamas said three of its gunmen were killed and another three wounded in two air strike in northern Gaza. It did not comment on Israel's allegation that they had prepared rocket launches. Six other rockets were fired across the border on Tuesday, the Israeli military said, though causing no damage or casualties.

The border bombing was claimed by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, one of several small factions in Gaza that often operate independent of the dominant Hamas.

Armageddon scenario: US, Israel ready for huge joint drill in Iran's shadow

Israel's policy is to hold Hamas responsible for any attacks from the territory, which the Islamist group has controlled since 2007.

Though hostile to Israel, Hamas has mostly sought to avoid direct clashes as it shores up its rule in the face of more radical challengers and reaches out to potential allies abroad.

Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes linked

The past decade of eruptions of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano may have acted as a pressure-relief valve for neighboring Mauna Loa, according to a new model suggesting two of the planet's biggest volcanoes connect deep underground.

Scientists know each of the two Hawaiian volcanoes has its own plumbing ?separate, shallow magma chambers. Such chambers are the source of Kilauea's rising lava lake, which is threatening to spill over. But 50 miles (80 kilometers) down, in a part of the Earth's mantle layer called the asthenosphere, Mauna Loa and Kilauea are dynamically coupled, said Helge Gonnermann, a professor at Rice University in Houston, who is the lead author of a new study showing the link.

"It's like groundwater in an aquifer or oil in an oil reservoir," Gonnermann told OurAmazingPlanet. "We know that there is melt that extends beneath both volcanoes. Changes in pressure can be transmitted to both volcanoes."

The Hawaiian Islands are hotspot volcanoes, formed as the Pacific plate moves over a plume of hot magma in the mantle. Pressure changes in the pooled magma in the mantle could rapidly affect both volcanoes, the model indicates.

The model helps explains some intriguing observations: When one volcano inflates, the other starts to bulge about six months later. At times, such as in 2005, both volcanoes inflate at the same, GPS data show

The study suggests that Mauna Loa's and Kilauea's opposing pattern ? when one is active, the other is quiet ? occurs because eruptions at one volcano release pressure in the other.

The model suggests Mauna Loa, which produced its most recent blast in 1984, had accumulated enough magma for another eruption, but its pressure was relieved by Kilauea's heightened activity.

"The hypothesis coming out of this model is that if we hadn't seen this increased activity at Kilauea, then we would not have seen this pressure relief," Gonnermann said.

The summit of Kilauea has recently started inflating, giving the researchers a real-world test. "If Kilauea continues to inflate like it is right now, and if our model holds water, we should also see another period of inflation at Mauna Loa in about half a year," Gonnermann said.

Football's Loss at Princeton Changes Outlook

In an improbable comeback victory, the Princeton Tigers (4-2, 3-0 Ivy) upended the Harvard football team (5-1, 2-1) this weekend, scoring 29 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to notch a 39-34 win and secure sole possession of first place in the Ivy League.

In a way, the Crimson got an early dose of Halloween at Princeton this weekend.

The trick? A slew of misfortunes, in part inspired by missed opportunities from Harvard and in part exacerbated by a suddenly unstoppable Tigers offense, that led to the Crimson?s first loss of the season, ending its nation-leading 14-game winning streak.

At the half, the Crimson held a commanding 20-0 lead over the Princeton with two scores from senior tight end Kyle Juszczyk and a score from junior receiver Ricky Zorn. Harvard looked every bit the dominant force it has been all season, defeating its opponents by an average margin of 27.6 points and receiving a first-place vote in The Sports Network FCS poll.

The third period and beginning of the fourth were more of the same for the Crimson, with the defense limiting the Tigers to a touchdown and a field goal off a fumble recovery while posting two additional scores to Juszczyk and fellow tight end Cameron Brate to go up, 34-10, with 13:02 left in the fourth quarter.

Then, all at once, things started to fall apart. Princeton pounced on opportunities time and time again, capitalizing on good field position created by defense that forced the Harvard offensive side to go three-and-out and blocked a punt attempt and field goal attempt.

Three touchdown passes from sophomore Connor Michelson and two successful two-point conversion attempts brought the Tigers to within a possession of the Crimson, 34-32, with under three minutes remaining in the contest.

And then, it happened. Princeton forced Harvard to a three-and-out punt, but the Crimson was able to pin the Tigers at their 10-yard line with just under two minutes to go in regulation. A sack took Michelson out of the game with less than a minute to go, forcing Princeton to substitute sophomore Quinn Epperly.

With 13 seconds to go and mass confusion on the field, Epperly heaved a 36-yard prayer to the back corner that junior Roman Wilson was able to haul in, sealing the deal for the Tigers, 39-34.

Impossible? No, but very improbable.

While Princeton was supposed to be one of the Crimson?s toughest challenges en route to its second straight Ivy League title, no one could have predicted the wild finish to Saturday?s game.

This begs the question of whether the Tigers? stunning finish is merely a pre-Halloween trick, a fluke loss that Harvard will be able to come back from and look past with ease, or something more serious.

The loss to Princeton puts the Crimson in a three-way tie for second place in the Ivy League with Dartmouth and Penn, two teams that are on the remaining part of Harvard?s schedule.

The Big Green is 4-2, 2-1 in the Ivy League, while the Quakers are 2-4 but still maintain a 2-1 record in the Ivy League.?Taking a closer look at the box score against the Tigers, it doesn?t look like the Crimson offense struggled at all to put points on the board against Princeton, at least through three quarters and a good part of the fourth.

Senior quarterback Colton Chapple was 31 for 45, torching Princeton for 448 yards and five touchdowns with support from Kyle Juszczyk?s 15 receptions, 192 yards, three touchdowns, and Treavor Scales? 21 carries and 104 yards.

The Crimson will need the continued hot play of its core players on offense and defense to remain in contention for its second consecutive Ivy League title.?But after watching the secondary struggle defending consecutive scores against the Tigers and giving up a last-second heave by backup quarterback Quinn Epperly, allowing Princeton to march down with relative ease, nothing seems like a given anymore.

Harvard will have to treasure each and every victory moving forward as a treat. A loss is a loss and the Crimson will go into Halloween weekend with a different mindset than it had before, not basking in the glow of gaining national attention with its 14-game winning streak and high consideration in the FCS, but rather with a tough loss to a team that it should have beaten.

Hopefully it will be able to shed its mask of inefficacy and come back bigger, stronger, and badder.

Metabolic Factors May Increase Men's Risk Of Prostate Cancer Death

Metabolic factors increase risk of prostate cancer death in men

A new study shows that a man?s risk of dying from prostate cancer is higher if he suffers from high blood pressure, has a high BMI, and has high blood sugar, a condition commonly referred to as the metabolic syndrome.

Medical News Today reports the study, which appeared in the September issue of BMC Medicine, did note that obesity did not increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.

As a results of the study, the authors suggest that public health recommendations regarding lifestyle and diet, which are currently categorized to help prevent Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, be changed to include lowering the risk of prostate cancer death.

As Science Daily reports: ?During an average follow-up time of 12 years, 6,673 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer and 961 died from the disease. Men in the highest categories of body mass index and blood pressure had a 36 percent and 62 percent increased risk of dying from prostate cancer, respectively.?

Though the increased metabolic factors did not lead to more cases of prostate cancer, the study appeared to find a link suggesting that, if those in the high metabolic syndrome range did develop prostate cancer, they were more likely to die from the disease.

?These observations suggest that cardiovascular risk factors such as overweight and hypertension are involved in stimulating the progression of prostate cancer,? Dr. P?r Stattin said.

Prostate cancer, according to 2011 World Health Organization statistics, is the second most common cancer among males and the sixth leading cause of cancer deaths globally among men. The reach of the disease varies around the globe however. The United States has a higher percentage of prostate cancer diagnosis than anywhere else, while it is less common in South and East Asia.

Qualcomm develops eyes-free smartphone for the blind and visually impaired, calls it Ray

Smartphones have made juggling multiple single-purpose gadgets a thing of the past for many, but the blind and visually impaired often use a raft of devices built with eyes-free use in mind. Qualcomm and Project Ray, however, are aiming to consolidate phone calls, text messaging with voice read-out, navigation, object recognition, audio book reading and more for the visually impaired in a system built on an off-the-shelf Android phone. To navigate the smartphone, users leverage a handful of simple finger movements that can be started at any point on the handset's touch screen. Voice prompts and vibration provide feedback to users, and the UI adapts to usage patterns and preferences. Currently, Ray devices have access to Israel's Central Library for the Blind and are being tested by 100 folks in the country. For the full lowdown, head past the break for the press release.

This Tracker Torpedo Keeps Social Tabs on Sand Tiger Sharks

Sand Tiger sharks have been patrolling coastal waters worldwide for more than 250,000 years. But with only a pair of pups born every few years, this placid apex predator is succumbing to human pressures. Part of the problem is that we still know virtually nothing about their habits—we can't help them if we don't understand them. But that's fast changing thanks to this seawater-sipping, shark-shadowing, scientific submersible. More »

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) ? The endgame at hand, President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney plunged into the final two weeks of an excruciatingly close race for the White House Tuesday with TV advertising nearing an astronomical $1 billion and millions of Americans casting early ballots in all regions of the country.

Increasingly, Ohio looms as ground zero in a campaign waged in tough economic times. The state's unemployment of 7 percent is well below the national average of 7.8 percent, Obama has campaigned here more than in any other state and Romney has booked a heavy schedule of appearances in hopes of a breakthrough.

The economy was the theme Tuesday as the two rivals put their final, foreign policy-focused debate behind.

Obama brandished a new 20-page summary of his second-term agenda and told a campaign crowd in Florida his rival's blueprint "doesn't really create jobs. His deficit plan doesn't reduce the deficit; it adds to it."

More than that, he said Romney changes his positions so often that he can't be trusted.

In Dayton, Obama said of his rival: "In the closing weeks of the campaign, he's doing everything he can to hide his true positions. He is terrific at making presentations about stuff he thinks is wrong with America, but he sure can't give you an answer about what will make it right. And that's not leadership you can trust."

Before flying to Ohio for his 17th trip of the election year, Obama also said with a hint of humility, "It doesn't mean that every candidate is going to get everything done all at once perfectly, but you want somebody to be able to look you in the eye and say, here's what I believe."

Romney countered in an appearance before a large, cheering crowd in Henderson Nev. He said Obama wants a new term for the same policies that have produced slow economic growth and high unemployment for four long years. "He is a status quo candidate. ... That's why his campaign is slipping and ours is gaining so much steam," he said.

Romney's aides dismissed Obama's 20-page booklet as nothing new, and the former Massachusetts governor said of the president, "His vision for the future is a repeat of the past."

There seemed to be no end to the television advertising in a season when voters report they are heartily sick of it.

Material collected by ad trackers showed the two candidates and allied groups have spent or reserved nearly $950,000 million so far on television commercials, much of it negative, some of it harshly so. Romney and GOP groups had a $100 million advantage over Obama and his supporters, although variations in the purchase price made it difficult to compare the number of ads each side had run.

Increasingly, the two campaigns were focused on turning out their supporters in early balloting under way in more than half the states.

"Every single day right now is Election Day," Obama's campaign manager, Jim Messina, told reporters. On that, at least, Republicans offered no rebuttal.

About 5 million voters have already cast ballots according to data collected by the United States Elections Project at George Mason University, and about 35 million are expected to do so before Nov. 6.

While no votes will be counted until Election Day, the group said Democrats have cast more ballots than Republicans in the battleground states of North Carolina and Iowa by about 20 percentage points, while in Nevada, about 121,000 people have voted ? 49 percent Democrats and 35 percent Republicans.

Republicans have an early edge in Colorado, where Republicans have cast 43 percent of the 25,000 ballots to date, to 34 percent for Democrats.

Romney's camp projected confidence as the race entered its final phase, still riding an October surge in the polls that began after the challenger's dominant performance in the first presidential debate on Oct. 3 in Denver.

The Electoral College math made clear neither man had sealed a victory.

Wins in Ohio and in Wisconsin ? a state that Democrats have carried in the past six presidential elections ? would leave Obama only 5 electoral votes short of the 270 needed for victory.

That placed a premium on Ohio ? readily apparent from the candidates' campaign schedules and the millions in television advertising flooding the state.

Romney arrives in Cincinnati on Wednesday night after his Western swing, and he is expected to spend all day Thursday and part of Friday campaigning across the state.

His running mate, Paul Ryan, is to deliver a speech on the economy Thursday at Cleveland State University, something of an unusual event in a campaign with only two weeks to run.

Obama intends to fly into the state Thursday at the end of a two-day cross-country trip into a half-dozen battlegrounds.

Vice President Joe Biden was in Toledo during the day before heading to Dayton to join Obama at their rally, mid-way through a three-day tour of the state.

Barring a last-minute change, Obama appears on course to win states and the District of Columbia that account for 237 of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory. Romney has a firm hold on states with 191 electoral votes.

The battlegrounds account for the remaining 110 electoral votes: Florida (29), North Carolina (15), Virginia (13), New Hampshire (4), Iowa (6), Colorado (9), Nevada (6), Ohio (18) and Wisconsin (10).

Young and old differ on e-book preferences

NEW YORK (AP) ? A new survey says there's a generation gap among e-book fans.

Readers under 30 prefer cellphones and computers. Those over 30 like dedicated devices such as the Kindle.

The Pew Research Center's latest study focuses on young readers. Among e-book users surveyed, between ages 16-29, more than half read one on a desktop or laptop and around 40 percent use a cellphone. Around 25 percent used an e-reader. Among respondents 30 and older, 46 percent preferred e-readers, just 25 percent cellphones.

According to the report released Tuesday, teen readers were less likely to read an e-book than those immediately older. Around 12 percent of respondents aged 16-17 read an e-book over the past year, compared to 21 percent for ages 18-24 and 25 percent for ages 30-39.

Abortion in Central America: Where women don't have a say or ...

International organizations are stressing the high mortality rates and lack of protection for women and their sexual and reproductive freedom.

Nuria Riutord

A young twenty-year old woman is seven months pregnant and home alone. The house is a rural family property in her native village, Sacacoyo, El Salvador. Suddenly she suffers from a premature delivery. Her family find her in state of shock, hemorrhaging and weak.

They take her immediately to the hospital where the doctor who took care of her accused her to the authorities for having a planned abortion, which is illegal according to the country?s law.

The girl hadn?t informed her employers about her pregnancy and her partner abandoned her just after she gave him the news.

The accusations culminate in the girl?s retention. After that a trial is carried out without a single autopsy and all evidence taken to consideration was the physician testimony. It ends with the woman being given a thirty year sentence. .

This story is just one more example of the totally traumatic experiences many girls have to go through in most of the Central America countries.

In this case the name of the protagonist is Sonia T?bora. After seven years of torment due to the legal process she had to go through, in 2005 her case was revised and this August she was released.

It is without a doubt one the most emblematic recent episodes in ?the fight for ?woman?s sexual health and reproductive rights across Central America. The figures concerning these problems are devastating.

A reality in numbers

According to the association ?Central America Women?s Network (CAWN), 95% of the abortions in Latin America are not done with the necessary medical safety a procedure like it requires.

The health professionals are obliged by law to notify the authorities in any case of abortion. This obviously breaks the confidential doctor ? patient relationship and makes any woman going through this situation for her future, and more likely to find alternative, and sometimes more dangerous methods of abortion.

M?xico has a high mortality rate in pregnant woman, especially in poor rural areas. Even though in Mexico City it is legal to abort within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, nowadays in half of the counties it is considered a crime and it can be punished with even 30 years of prison.

At the ?moment over twenty women, aged between 15 and 33 years old, are serving for this matter.

In Guatemala ?it would seem that everything is being done to protect ?women who are considering abortion. The reality is that they don?t actually have access to contraceptives. In fact, the governmental plans for the sexual health and education and family planning aren?t seeming to be effective.

In spite of the different international treaties signed about this matter the figures show that every day two woman die because of complications before, during or after birth.

The mortality rate is ?120 deaths in ?every 100.000 births. This is ?the second highest in all Latin America. It is estimated that 65.000 abortions take place annually, which means one for every six pregnancies.

If we look at Honduras, we see that the legislation has been changing over the decades and that at this point there are no exceptions to the general abortion prohibition.

On the contrary, during the Nineties ?women were allowed to have an abortion when it was in a case of rape, or when there was a risk for the mother?s life or because of a disability of the foetus. Today it is very different, it being ?illegal even to use the ?morning after pill?, which is different to what most human rights organisations around the world stand for.

No way out

Back to El Salvador, where hormonal contraceptives are included in the national public health system, the admirable efforts to make society aware about this problem and to give a better sexual education are not resulting in as good changes as expected. In fact, over 40% of women get pregnant before being 20 years old. This is happening ?even now when anti-conceptive methods are reaching a usage of 70%.

Since 1999, by law, the foetus is considered a human being from the moment of the conception. It is also established that abortion can punishable with up to 30 years, being ?a crime under any circumstance. The truth ?is that the number of abortions is indeterminate and at this moment there are women in prison because of having an abortion.

In Nicaragua, the country has developed a system to make family planning work and to reduce mortality rate. The thing is that it is only applied in the richest parts of the nation. According to the figures, 100 of every 100.000 births still end with the mother dying.

Another alarming fact is that they have the highest number of teenage pregnancies: representing a quarter of the total number of pregnancies. As there is no provision of a legal abortion in the country?s legislation, girls turn to unorthodox and unsafe ways to solve their situation.

All these figures show that there is no judiciary safety (and not even social support either sometimes) for woman in matters of their sexual and reproductive freedom in Central America.

The only way to change this issue, and the lives of many Latin American women, is to fight for the causes of all the international organisations protecting human?s and women?s rights as well as those of the World Health Organisation.

Brunswick hospital officials: No intention to 'extinguish' competitor ...

BRUNSWICK ? Mid Coast Hospital officials Monday denied they want to consolidate with Parkview Adventist Medical Center to "extinguish" the competing hospital.

Speaking to a packed conference room at Mid Coast Hospital, officials laid out the hospital's proposal as a plan to heal and strengthen health care in the community ? and to save $24.3 million a year.

Mid Coast's offer came after Central Maine Healthcare, the parent company of Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, filed a Certificate of Need on Aug. 29 to take over Parkview. Mid Coast subsequently filed its own Certificate of Need on Sept. 19 to merge with Parkview.

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services will hold a public hearing on Central Maine Healthcare's proposal at 10 a.m. Oct. 24 at the Knights of Columbus building, 2 Columbus Drive.

On Monday, Lois Skillings, president and chief executive officer of Mid Coast Health Services, appealed for support for Mid Coast's competing proposal.

She said two hospitals are too many for a small community like Brunswick, in a state that is paying 25 percent more for health care than the federal average. She said 44 percent of all beds at Mid Coast and Parkview are empty.

"This excess capacity is what's costing our community $24 million extra ... every year in delivering health care," Skillings said. "We feel by coming together, actually diminishing the beds in our region, we can improve that utilization rate and the better we can improve in health, the less need there will be for in-patient beds in the future as well."

For health care to work in the future, she said, three things simultaneously need to happen: the health of the population needs to improve, health care itself must improve ? switching its focus to preventative care, in particular ? and the per capita cost of care needs to fall.

"The rising cost of health care is breaking the back of our economy," Skillings said, "and we can no longer afford the duplicated waste and expense that has gotten ourselves into this position in the first place."

Parkview officials did not attend Monday's forum. But in a newspaper advertisement published over the weekend, the hospital said it has repeatedly said "no" to proposals by Mid Coast, and that people deserve a choice of hospitals.

"Enough is enough," the ad said. "The most recent barrage of threats has done nothing to change our minds and certainly does not improve the health of the communities we both serve."

It went on the say that Mid Coast's consolidation plan will "extinguish" Parkview.

Linda Cronkhite, a former vice president at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, shared Parkview's concerns Monday.

"As far as I care, I want options and I can't believe that those of you that are in this room don't want options," she told the forum. "I think these scare tactics are not healthy at all for this community, and I'll tell you if there's only one place in town, I'll go elsewhere."

Skillings replied that Mid Coast is not trying to divide the community.

"What we would like to do is rewrite the next chapter with a fresh slate with an opportunity to work together. It's not really about annihilating, it's actually about saving," she said. "And it's about preventing a very predatory system in another part of the state coming into our community. And I don't even have anything against Central Maine; I think they're a great hospital."

John Morse, president of the Mid Coast Health Services board, also responded to Cronkhite's concerns. He said that even though people in Bath were not happy when Bath Memorial and Regional Memorial hospitals merged in Mid Coast, the long-term effect was good.

"I think they've all seen the light and we're getting better service, a better facility," Morse said.

John Farnham, a member of the Mid Coast Health Services board, said he had a positive experience when he worked with the Hospice Volunteers of Maine as it was merged with Mid Coast.

"I can tell you that the large community of hospice volunteers were very much opposed to this. They were very fearful that this little organization would be swallowed up by this big corporate structure," Farnham said.

"As I looked at the pros and cons of joining with Mid Coast, I realized that that move was essential for the perpetuation of Hospice Volunteers and unless we did that, we would cease to exist as an organization," he said.

Another attendee asked where Mid Coast's $24.3 million in annual savings would originate in the proposed merger.

"We have virtually two of everything in the two facilities," said Robert McCue, Mid Coast chief financial officer. "Everything would basically reduce down to one."

He later said Mid Coast would also reduce the number of employees over time, but only through attrition.

Pimples at the polls: Argentina tries to lower voting age to 16

If successful, President Kirchner would most likely benefit.

Should the US lower its voting age to 16 or 17? Argentina is the latest nation on track to do so.

The Senate of the South American nation voted this week to allow 16- and 17-year-olds to cast ballots at the polls, generating outcry from political opponents of President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who is widely supported by a growing youth movement, which we reported about here. Critics say that, in appealing to youths, President Kirchner is trying to bolster her party ahead of October 2013 legislative elections.

The president?s supporters, however, say the goal is to strengthen democracy. ?It is young people who create the counterculture, who can see reality from another point of view, and who question all of their society?s ideas and prejudices,? Elena Corregido, a ruling party senator and co-author of the bill, told the radio show The World. ?So we by no means think that they?ll be pulled along like cattle to the market.?

If the bill, which now goes to the lower house, becomes law, Argentina would join Brazil, Nicaragua, and Ecuador in Latin America, as well as Austria, in setting 16 as the minimum voting age. The vast majority of countries in the world today, as seen in this chart of voter ages globally, have placed the minimum voting age at 18. (In some countries, like Saudi Arabia, citizens have to wait until they?re 21 to cast a ballot.)

Those against the move in Argentina do not just cite unfair politics. In opinion pieces and comments to the local media, critics are arguing that youths are too easily manipulated and not sufficiently educated or mature enough to participate in the task as important as electing a nation?s president.

Should US follow suit?

Infamous Collection (PS3)

By Jeffrey L. Wilson

Infamous Collection?the tale of bike courier Cole MacGrath, who gains super powers after an explosion wrecks Empire City ?joins the likes of God of War Saga, Ratchet & Clank Collection, Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, and Journey Collector's Edition?as wallet-friendly game bundles that showcase the PlayStation 3's exclusive titles. The $39.99 compilation?which features Infamous, Infamous 2, a voucher code to download PSN's Infamous: Festival of Blood, extra missions, and more?is a solid package for those who like sandbox titles where you can wreak havoc in a bombed-out city that's suffered societal collapse. Bugs (such as getting stuck in walls) unfortunately dull the experience.

Sucker Punch Production's action title puts you in the role of Cole MacGrath, a generic, gravelly-voiced protagonist who fits into this console generation's unfortunate ho-hum lead character archetype. He gains mysterious energy generation abilities that let him shock enemies with lightning bolts, reverse gravity, and more. The hook in these games is that how you use these abilities in Karma Moments affects not just the gameplay, but how your character evolves as a person.

For example, when a group of people faced off against a line of Empire City cops safeguarding a walled-off area of the city, the game prompted me to either directly engage the cops, or do so within the confines of the crowd. The former is the benevolent option as you put yourself at risk; the latter is the malevolent option, as you incite a riot which brings the police's wrath upon the crowd. As you progress through the game, you unlock more powers catered toward your good/evil inclination. Whether you save or destroy Sucker Punch's beautifully detailed game world is up to you.

The gameplay holds up for the most part. Cole can climb structures, shoot projectiles from his hands, and perform other superhuman acts. Unfortunately, he would occasionally get stuck in a wall or in the ground. Sometimes I could wiggle Cole free; other times I had to reset the PS3.

If you like action games with a touch of superhero flair (or supervillain flair, depending on how you play), Infamous Collection is worth the $39.99 asking price?if you don't currently own any of the games. Gamers new to the series will have a blast slinging cars, hurling lightning bolts, climbing buildings, and battling impressive boss characters. Just beware a few bugs.

Scottsdale Real Estate Market in 2012 - Low Ball ... - Scottsdale homes

During 2011, low ball offers were fairly common in Scottsdale AZ. Realtors wouldn?t blink when they received a low ball offer.? In fact, 10% of Realtors said they received at least one low ball offer on one of their listed homes. A low ball is usually considered an offer that is more than 25% off of the list price. The number of low ball offers that we are seeing in scottsdale az real estateScottsdale has dropped dramatically during 2012. Most buyers realize that this is a waste of their time. There is often not even a remote possibility that a Seller will consider an offer that far off of the list price.

There is a lot of competition for homes in Scottsdale right now and the Sellers know it. The inventory of homes for sale in Scottsdale is at a 3 year low. There simply aren?t enough homes on the market. There are more buyers than good homes for sale. The only time a low ball offer is even a possibility is if the home has been on the market for over a year. The longer the home is on the market, the more likely it is that an owner will consider a significant price reduction.

Visit our Scottsdale real estate trends page for more information on how the market has changed in the past year.
