Japan finmin Aso to travel to Myanmar, meet president Thein Sein

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japan?s deputy prime minister, Taro Aso, travels to Myanmar this week for talks with President Thein Sein to boost relations with the rapidly tranfsorming country and support Japanese business interests in the region.

Aso, who doubles as finance minister, meets Thein Sein and his opposite number Win Shein in the capital Naypyitaw on Thursday in the first high-profile overseas visit by a member of Tokyo?s new cabinet since it took office last week.

Prior to his ministerial appointment, Aso had already planned to visit Myanmar as a lawmaker and a member of Japan-Myanmar Association, a group of politicians, businessmen and former diplomats set up to advance Japanese business interests in Myanmar.

Their sales ? and sometimes their premises ? badly damaged by a territorial spat between Tokyo and Beijing, Japanese firms have made an aggressive push back into Myanmar after Thein Sein, a former member of the military junta began overseeing reforms.

Myanmar has introduced a substantial series of social and economic reforms since power was handed to a quasi-civilian government took power in 2011 after nearly half a century of military rule.

Change has attracted large numbers of foreign investors and prompted the United States and European Union to ease longstanding sanctions to encourage further reform.

The move by Aso, one of the closest allies of the conservative premier Shinzo Abe, underscores the importance of the Southeast Asian country, where a joint Japan-Myanmar consortium has signed a deal to develop a 2,400-hectare special economic zone in Thilawa, close to its largest city of Yangon.

The Japan-Myanmar Association has been central to securing state support for the project, including a waiver of most of Myanmar?s debt arrears of more than $6 billion necessary to provide fresh loans for the construction of the zone.

Japan has said it will start waiving the arrears at the earliest opportunity in 2013.

Japan may provide an estimated $12.6 billion over several years in aid to build infrastructure around Thilawa, officials with knowledge of the project told Reuters. The plan is to build the first 450 hectares of the park by 2015 and start luring Japanese and global manufacturers.

Aso is to visit Thilawa and meet Japanese business representatives in Yangon on Friday.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe plans his first overseas visit to Washington around the end of January. (Reporting by Antoni Slodkowski; Editing by Ron Popeski)

(AP) ? The Browns are changing again.

One day after ending yet another dismal season with a loss in Pittsburgh, Cleveland fired coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert, the first moves in what is expected to be a massive offseason overhaul by new owner Jimmy Haslam.

Shurmur went 9-23 in his two seasons with the Browns, who will embark on yet another offseason of change ? the only constant in more than a decade of futility. Cleveland has lost at least 11 games in each of the past five seasons and made the playoffs just once since returning to the NFL as an expansion team in 1999.

The Browns just can't seem to get it right.

The firings of Shurmur and Heckert signal the start of a renovation by Haslam and CEO Joe Banner, who will immediately begin looking for replacements.

"We felt that these moves were in the best interests of the Cleveland Browns and our future," Haslam said in a statement. "I enjoyed getting to know Tom and Pat over the past several months, and want to thank them, not just for their contributions to the Browns, but also the insight they were able to provide."

Already, the list of possible coaches to take over for Shurmur includes some of college football's top names. Haslam may want to make a big splash and land either Alabama's Nick Saban or Oregon's Chip Kelly, who both still have bowl games ahead. Penn State's Bill O'Brien is also believed to be on the Browns' short list.

There is also reported interest in several NFL assistants including Indianapolis' Bruce Arians, New England's Josh McDaniels, Denver's Mike McCoy, Washington's Kyle Shanahan and Cincinnati's Jay Gruden.

Among the general manager candidates are: Atlanta player personnel director David Caldwell, San Francisco director of player personnel Tom Gamble, Baltimore assistant GM Eric DeCosta and NFL Network analyst and Mike Lombardi, who worked with Banner in Philadelphia and for the Browns when Bill Belichick was Cleveland's coach.

Banner promised in a recent interview with The Associated Press not to put any limits on his search for a new coach.

"It doesn't have to be a college coach," said Banner, who hired Andy Reid during his 19 seasons with the Eagles. "It doesn't have to be a pro coach. It doesn't have to be an offensive guy. It doesn't have to be a defensive guy. I'm more looking for qualities of a person consistent with the most successful coaches."

Shurmur's replacement will be the Browns' sixth coach since 1999.

The Browns were competitive this season under Shurmur. They just didn't win enough.

Cleveland was still in the playoff mix earlier this month, but a three-game losing streak to close the season ? they were blown out by Washington and Denver in consecutive weeks ? ended any chance of Shurmur saving his job.

Shurmur, who was emotional when he addressed the Browns following Sunday's loss, leaves the team with some satisfaction.

"I am extremely proud of the players on this team, who I felt made tremendous strides and helped to make the Cleveland Browns relevant again," Shurmur said in a release. "I want to thank them, as well as my entire coaching staff for making the past two years enjoyable. My coaches are outstanding teachers and even better men. They helped me lead these players through a unique time of transition.

"This group of players will achieve success soon, and there will be a part of me that will feel very good when that happens."

Shurmur's fate may have been sealed on the first day of training camp in July when Haslam's intent to buy the Browns from Randy Lerner for $1 billion was announced. It may not have mattered how Shurmur did this season because Haslam, a former minority owner with the Pittsburgh Steelers who built his fortune with Flying Pilot J travel centers, was intent on bringing in his own people.

Banner's arrival forced out president Mike Holmgren, who hired both Shurmur and Heckert but left before the end of his third year with Cleveland.

Shumrur, who has two years remaining on his contract, was dealt a difficult hand from the start.

His first season with the Browns was complicated by the labor lockout, depriving him a chance to work with his players in the offseason or installing his offensive and defensive systems. He chose not to hire an offensive coordinator, holding down both positions in his first year, a decision he later said was a mistake.

Shurmur made his share of mistakes. He had some game-management issues and his play calling was often questioned. However, the 47-year-old seemed to be getting better in his second season, and he deserves credit for developing one of the league's youngest teams. The Browns had 17 rookies and 26 players with two years or less of experience on their roster.

Heckert, who came to Cleveland from Philadelphia, succeeded in upgrading the Browns' talent. He overhauled an aging team, infusing the Browns with solid young players through the draft. In April, he selected running back Trent Richardson, quarterback Brandon Weeden and offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz, all of whom had solid first pro seasons.

Heckert also gambled and nabbed wide receiver Josh Gordon in the supplemental draft, a choice that seemed risky but paid off as the 21-year-old blossomed.

But it may have been a move Heckert couldn't pull off that doomed him.

The Browns were beaten out by Washington in the sweepstakes to get prized rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III. Cleveland tried to package picks to swap with the Rams, who eventually made a blockbuster deal with the Redskins who then drafted RGIII with the second overall choice.

Heckert, who was Holmgren's first hire with Cleveland, thought he would have five years to build the Browns but wound up getting just three. It's expected Heckert will quickly be scooped up as more than one dozen teams are expected to have front-office openings.

CSN: Why Reid fired? |? 5 possible successors

The months after the 2010 season proved to be a crossroads for Eagles coach Andy Reid and the franchise he had presided over for the past 12 years.

The Eagles had just caught lightning in a bottle with the resurrection of Michael Vick? into one of the NFL?s most dynamic quarterbacks. Reid had won his seventh NFC East title, and although the Eagles had lost a first-round playoff game to eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay, the organization appeared headed in the right direction.

Then Reid?s world fell apart.

The man who had benefitted from so many good decisions in his first dozen years made one poor judgment call after another. Instead of making another Super Bowl run, the Eagles spiraled downward and missed the postseason in each of the next two years, leaving owner Jeffrey Lurie no choice but to dismiss Reid with one year left on the coach?s contract.

How did the Reid empire fall so quickly and so profoundly? Here is a look back at the sequence of mishaps and mistakes from the end of the 2010 season that led to the end of his era.

1. Jan. 19, 2011

Reid names Jim Washburn defensive line coach

You can argue that Reid shouldn?t have fired defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, but changes were necessary. The Eagles had set a club record for passing touchdowns allowed (31) and had finished with the NFL?s worst red-zone efficiency (77 percent) in decades.

Reid had made up his mind before firing McDermott that his defensive scheme would change from the aggressive blitzing preached by the late Jim Johnson (and carried on by McDermott) to softer coverage with more pressure from the front four. He just needed someone who could coax more sacks from the defensive line.

Enter Washburn.

Reid convinced the organization to spend big bucks on the free-agent defensive line coach whose trademark wide-nine scheme had annually produced some of the NFL?s most dominant front lines in Tennessee.

But Reid didn?t do his homework. In hiring Washburn, he brought in a polarizing figure who cared more about sacks than the overall state of the defense. Washburn essentially was given more power than anyone else on the defensive staff and leveraged that authority to coddle his lineman and handcuff his defensive coordinators.

It took more than two months of the 2011 season for the Eagles to understand how to defend the run behind the wide nine, but the damage had been done. The Eagles started 1-5 and missed the postseason despite sharing the NFL lead in sacks.

This past season, even the wide nine stopped producing results. The Eagles went three straight games without a sack -- losing all three -- and didn?t have more than three in a game until Week 15. Without steady pressure, the defense became more dysfunctional than ever.

Reid first cut Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Babin -- Washburn?s pet project -- and then fired the disruptive Washburn 12 games into the season and 28 games into Washburn?s tenure.

2. Feb. 2, 2011

Reid names Juan Castillo defensive coordinator, Howard Mudd offensive line coach

By hiring Washburn to implement an up-front scheme, Reid sidetracked his search to replace McDermott. He interviewed several candidates for the opening -- including Dennis Allen -- but the job was deemed less desirable for hot coaching commodities with Washburn?s scheme already set in stone.

With nowhere to go, Reid turned to his longtime offensive line coach, who for several years had lobbied for the job. Castillo had never coached defense in the NFL, and his inexperience couldn?t be masqueraded.

The Eagles blew fourth-quarter leads in three consecutive games and opened the 2011 season at 1-4. A four-game win streak in December highlighted by better defense proved to be a fluke this past season, when the Eagles blew leads in back-to-back games against the Steelers and Lions and fell to 3-3. Reid fired Castillo during the bye week and replaced him with secondary coach Todd Bowles. Reid would later suggest that he should have fired Washburn before Castillo.

Before he named Castillo as his defensive coordinator, Reid coaxed veteran offensive line coach Howard Mudd out of retirement and let Mudd have carte blanche over the offensive line the same way Washburn was granted control of the defensive line.

Mudd, whose zone blocking scheme is best carried out by smaller and more nimble linemen (or freaks of nature like Jason Peters), immediately benched veterans Jamaal Jackson and Winston Justice and got rid of key reserves Mike McGlynn, Austin Howard and A.Q Shipley.

Although his schemes helped left guard Evan Mathis and rookie center Jason Kelce emerge? and cleared the way for LeSean McCoy?s breakout 2011 season, they failed to keep Vick upright and well protected. Vick absorbed one crushing hit after another and regressed from an improving pocket passer into a turnover machine.

Injuries this season to Peters, Kelce, Watkins and right tackle Todd Herremans illustrated the difficulty in implementing such a unique scheme. Inadequate reserves such as King Dunlap, Dallas Reynolds and rookie Dennis Kelly were tossed into the fire, leading to another round of excessive hits on Vick and more turnover problems.

Meanwhile, Justice, McGlynn and Shipley each started for a playoff-bound Colts offensive line. Scott started at right tackle for the Jets.

3. April 22-24, 2010

Reid drafts Danny Watkins, Jaiquawn Jarrett and Curtis Marsh

A series of questionable personnel decisions forced the Eagles to shift draft philosophy in 2011, when they used a first-round pick on right guard Danny Watkins and a second-rounder on Temple safety Jaiquawn Jarrett.

They had banked on Watkins, a 26-year-old Canadian and football novice, to stop the right guard carousel that had resulted from the 2009 bust free-agent signing of Stacy Andrews, whose inability to cement the job led to Max Jean-Gilles' and Nick Cole's porous platoon on the right side.

Watkins, a former firefighter, had played left tackle for just two years in a highly simplified Baylor offense, making his transition to right guard in Mudd?s scheme an uneasy one. He struggled with Mudd?s abrasive coaching style and didn?t start until Week 5 of his rookie season. By then, the Eagles were 1-3 and already playing catch-up.

Reid had also decided before that draft -- which preceded free agency because of the lockout -- that he would let reliable veteran safety Quintin Mikell walk in free agency, leaving him with second-year pros Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman as his only options. Reid then reached in the second round for Jarrett to pair with Allen, who was coming off major knee surgery as a rookie.

Allen wasn?t close to 100 percent by the 2011 opener and Jarrett looked lost from the start. The team was forced to start Coleman and Jarrad Page -- a seventh-round pick and street free-agent signing -- for the first four games. Not surprisingly, the Eagles fielded one of the league?s worst defenses in the first six weeks, especially against the run, which played a major role in their 1-5 start.

The Eagles also got little contribution from third-round cornerback Curtis Marsh, who was stuck behind four other corners on the depth chart in 2011 and played only scarcely on defense in 2012.

Watkins was inconsistent this past season for his first six starts and then headed to the sideline with an ankle injury that Reid said dated back to college, provoking more questions about why the team would use a first-round pick on damaged goods. Watkins? ankle eventually healed, but he didn't start another game.

Jarrett gave an embarrassing effort in the preseason opener against the Steelers and was released on the roster cutdown date, once again leaving Reid to soldier on with Allen and Coleman as starters. Both safeties struggled throughout the season and neither is guaranteed to return in 2013. Marsh played sporadically in 2012 and made no significant contribution.

Reid was also victimized by the 2010 draft. Two of his first three picks -- Brandon Graham and Daniel Te?o-Nesheim -- weren?t even on the roster at the start of the year. Te?o-Nesheim was cut before the opener and signed to the practice squad before Tampa Bay signed him. Graham was still on the Physically Unable to Perform lost after undergoing microfracture surgery at the end of his rookie season. The ?10 draft also yielded fourth-rounders Trevard Lindley (cornerback) and Keenan Clayton (linebacker), neither of whom were around by the start of 2012.

4. July 29-31, 2011

Reid signs Nnamdi Asomugha, Cullen Jenkins, Jason Babin and Vince Young

For years, Reid had built his playoff teams around a nucleus of draft picks who were groomed and developed together at the NovaCare Complex. Outside of a few outcasts, the Eagles generally embraced the atmosphere of professionalism and competition that Reid worked hard to cultivate and preserve for his first 12 seasons.

Every year, Reid would sprinkle into his nucleus one or two marquee free-agent signings to help bolster the roster and strengthen an area of immediate need. In the summer of 2011, though, he permitted an unprecedented spree of free-agent signings by president Joe Banner and general Howie Roseman that brought in veterans Asomugha, Babin, Jenkins, Young and Ronnie Brown. He also approved of the trade that sent quarterback Kevin Kolb to Arizona for a second-round pick and Pro Bowl cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

The additions two Pro Bowl corners to ?complement? Asante Samuel for essentially two starting jobs immediately created an uncomfortable situation. Brown looked slow and lethargic from his first practice. Young?s ?Dream Team? comment haunted the Eagles for the entire 2011 season -- as did his play during a three-game stretch in place of an injured Vick.

Most of the free agents were either unfit for the scheme, past their primes or both. Leadership in the locker room -- rarely an issue pre-2011 -- proved to be lacking during the tough times. At times over the past two years the Eagles have been accused of quitting, lacking heart and devoid of the senior leadership that guys like Brian Dawkins, Jon Runyan, Tra Thomas, Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook and Jeremiah Trotter had brought to Reid?s powerhouses in the early-to-mid 2000s.

5. Sept. 11, 2011:

Reid opens season with Casey Matthews at middle linebacker, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the slot and Moise Fokou at weak-side linebacker.

Throughout his career Reid has said his first priority as head coach is ensuring that his players are put in the best position to succeed. His personnel decisions going into 2011 reflected an entirely opposite approach.

After throwing boatloads of cash at defensive linemen and corners to spruce up his defense, Reid once again ignored his annual linebacker deficiency. He then saw fit to start rookie fourth-rounder Casey Matthews at middle linebacker, arguably the most important position on the defense.

Matthews, who had played outside linebacker at Oregon, was a disaster from the start. He was repositioned to the weak side after the season opener and then booted from the starting lineup altogether after Week 3. Reid also waited eight weeks to remove the struggling Moise Fokou in favor of Akeem Jordan, who?s bigger and a better fit behind the wide nine than Fokou.

There were other personnel decisions that were flawed from the start. Reid tried to accommodate his Pro Bowl cornerback trio by moving Asomugha around a la Charles Woodson and miscasting Cromartie as a nickel cornerback. Cromartie, whose strength is press coverage on the outside, struggled week after week against slot receivers on the inside while Joselio Hanson, one of the NFL?s best slot corners, watched from the sideline.

Even after dealing away Samuel before the 2012 season, the pairing of Asomugha and Rodgers-Cromartie still produced modest results. The wide nine is best carried in front of a zone scheme with sound tacklers at linebacker and defensive back, but Asomugha and Rodgers-Cromartie were career man-press corners who not only struggled with zone concepts but also were timid and unwilling tacklers.

The Eagles slogged through an eight-game stretch in 2012 in which they didn?t register an interception and allowed 19 touchdown passes. Reid finally made the right call on a linebacker after 2011, trading for two-time Pro Bowler DeMeco Ryans, but then allowed Castillo and Bowles to play second-round linebacker Mychal Kendricks at the strong side instead of the rookie?s more natural position on the weak side. Kendricks started off strong but wore down toward the middle of the season as the toll of shedding big offensive linemen and covering tight ends each week settled in.

The Best Advice For Anyone Focused On Self Improvement ...

The greatest way to help you develop personally is to educate yourself on the subject. There is a vast amount of information available on this subject, so it is in your best interests to take the knowledge you learn here and apply it towards being the best person you can possibly be.

Keep your focus on your inner self instead of your physical appearance. You don?t need to wear the newest fashions or be the hottest. However, the personality you cultivate will be the one thing you are ultimately judged on. Work on improving yourself as a whole person rather than superficial changes.

Leadership is the cornerstone of self improvement. Leadership can be defined in many ways, but most people like to define it as ?influence.? Examine how far you have grown as a leader. Which past events have had major, formative effects on your life? How did these people and events change you as a person? What are the things about you that make you a great fit for a team? Ask yourself these questions in order to see how you will be as a member of a team.

Stress and happiness do not go together. When the human mind is preoccupied with a state of stress, damage can be caused to both physical and mental aspects of the body. If we want to think clearly and strive for our goals with neat, calm purpose, we must eliminate the stress in our minds. Set a time each day to relax, to clear your mind, and be alone. Having this time every day can make you more peaceful and happy with yourself.

Try to read encouraging books. Everyone?s idea of a positive piece of writing is different. It may be a religious bible, or alternatively a book of inspirational quotes. By keeping something around that you can refer to for encouragement, you will be better able to handle all that life throws at you.

When you start your self improvement journey, always remember to focus on the fact that you are worthy of nothing less than the very best in life. Know that you owe it to yourself to do your best. Ultimately, you can be confident that you worked as hard as possible to achieve your goals.

Live according to your principles. Everyone has a set of beliefs that is integral to their identity. If you stay on top of your morals you will have a boost in self esteem and you will have a good base to defend them. Best of all, following your beliefs encourages consistency, and this is a much desired character trait.

Do away with unneeded aggravation in your life. To avoid stress, try to remain calm when something unexpected happens. Accept that there will be setbacks on the way to your goals, and focus on finding solutions to these problems rather than giving up.

Wherever you happen to be, when a great idea strikes your brain, write it down. Take notebook or journal with you, or even make notes on your cellular phone pad. If an idea grabs you while you are on the subway, write it down, then do something about it when inspiration strikes.

Overreacting to a situation will cause you unnecessary stress. Think about the situation, and try to find constructive ways to deal with it. You can usually fix any mistake, or find a way to work around it. Prioritize your achievements over your failures.

Not only is getting organized an achievement in itself, but it will help you to meet other goals faster. Take your major goals, and break them down into small, manageable components. You can then achieve each of these minor goals more quickly. A daily planner, online organizational software, or written journal can all provide great methods for tracking self improvement goals.

Each day should be an opportunity to top the previous day?s accomplishments. Strive for constant and unceasing improvement. In whatever you do, try to do it better than you ever have before.

Maximize your time for personal development to help you get more done. The simple trick is to take more breaks when you work. This may seem like it is counterproductive, but if you take a break you will reduce the amount of stress you have and get more done.

If you see yourself failing to reach goals, then you need to analyze the situation to figure out what the problem is. Find out how others have succeeded at the same thing. It is possible that you may be setting unrealistic expectations, missing an important element, or not devoting enough time or resources to your efforts.

The introduction makes it clear that you need to get educated in order to really develop yourself. You must also be able to apply that knowledge. There are many ways to begin personal growth. Once you start using these tips, you?ll start to feel better about yourself.

P.S.-If you love personal development and would love to make an extra $1000/day blogging with it, find out how my 2 friends are helping thousands of people make money about their passions ===> Discover why this game-changer is the most bad-ass personal development plan in the industry?s history!

ROME, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- International Rome Film Festival organizers said they will present "Django Unchained" director Quentin Tarantino with a lifetime achievement award.

Italian film composer Ennio Morricone will present Tarantino with the honor at a gala screening of his latest film Jan. 4, the film's European premiere, The Hollywood Reporter said Friday.

The film festival concluded Nov. 17, but artistic director Marco Mueller had promised that Rome would play some role in the film, which is an homage to the spaghetti Western.

"Django Unchained" wasn't finished in time for a festival screening.

"Quentin Tarantino's vision has radically influenced our collective imagery over the past 20 years," Mueller said. "Tarantino is a profoundly American yet very European filmmaker, because the relationship he has established with cinema and its history is as analytical as it is passionate."

Android vs. Android: LG looks to ban Samsung tablet in South Korea

Producers of Katie Holmes's Broadway play Dead Accounts, a dark family comedy by Theresa Rebeck, have announced that the show will be closing nearly two months early, wrapping up on January 6 instead of the planned February 24. Obviously the press release about the matter doesn't mention any reasons, but we can assume the show is closing because of poor ticket sales. January is a notoriously difficult frozen tundra for many a Broadway show to traverse, and Dead Accounts just didn't have it. So the cast is being spared the agony of trying. ...

New book demystifies the scientific publishing process

With years of research, months of writing invested, and often a career on the line, the process for submitting a research paper for publication can be a nerve-racking experience, especially since there has been little advice on what to do once the final footnote is typed. Phillippa J. Benson and Susan C. Silver set out to remedy this, and with What Editors Want: An Author's Guide to Scientific Journal Publishing finally demystify the process.

With chapters that include "Choosing the right journal," "How to write a cover letter," "Dealing with decision letters," and "What Editors wish you knew," What Editors Want offers clear guidance for navigating every step towards publication. The book is packed with practical examples, useful lists, and the most up-to-date advice on what authors need to know to successfully submit their papers for publication. Benson and Silver discuss a range of issues from the uses and abuses of the IF system, to sending the right images, to why choosing to write about this month's hottest topic can backfire in the long run. In addition, more than a dozen sidebars from editors and experts across scientific disciplines offer inside knowledge on what makes your paper move from "pass" to "publish."

Ivy Bateman ? A Night of Writing Improv Style

Baby Youre Cold Inside 200x300A Night of Writing Improv Style

By Ivy Bateman

I have tendonitis. Whoop dee-do right? I?m sure a lot of writers do, but we soldier on because not even swollen andbordering on immobile hands will stop us from writing our prose. However, in the summer, when I wrote Baby, You?re Cold, my tendonitis was particularly bad. As well as a freelance writer, at the time, I was also a copywriter for a website company and between the fun writing and work writing I spent most of my waking hours workingaway atthe computer. In order to give my hands a break, when I was copywriting, I often used a program called ?Dragon Naturally Speaking?. It?s a voice recognition program and is wonderful. I just speak into a mic on a head set and Bob?s your Uncle, it puts my words on the screen.

Now, no matter how handy it was for work related writing, I was always hesitant to use this program for my book writing. What I write often tends to be fairly graphic sexually and I sometimes cringe at the content as I type it. When I tried to image saying these explicit words out loud?well my office walls will tell you that even alone, my face can turn various shades of red in a fit of embarrassment.

However, deadlines push you do things you didn?t know you were capable of! It was a Friday night, my book was due the next day around noon, I had 6OOO words to go and my hands were killing me. As a side note, I have a daughter and I sometimes find it awkward to write erotica while she?s at home. On the night in question my daughter had a friend over: double awkward.

So, to get back to it, my hands were killing me, the deadline was looming and I knew that I didn?t have the strength in my hands to type the last 6K. With a grimace and a heavy sigh, I got to work finishing my book using the Dragon Program.

Let?s just say it?s a good thing the microphone on the headset is very sensitive! While the girls played loudly down the hall, I whispered my saucy, storytelling nothings to my dear Dragon. It was an intense night because of the situation I was in and because I didn?t know whether I could write a good enough story if it was going from my head to my mouth to the screen. When I first started writing more seriously, I had to go from mybrain to a pen to paperto typing into the computer. It took me a while to hone creative paths that ran from my brain to my hands to the keyboard and into the computer. That accomplishment was freeing; it cut a step, but this was a miracle! To go from my brain to voice to computer was euphoric! I took acting in school and am a stickler for a script.Improv was a nightmare for me. My mind would go blank! I would just stand on the stage and stare at the other actors, waiting for inspiration to whack me on the side of the head. After I slipped on the head set and got ready to dictate my book, at first, speaking my book into the computer felt like improv only with writing on the side. But, eventually I got into the same groove I usually get into while typing a story. I felt as though the story already existed and I was just reciting the actions being played out in my head.

Now, when I write, I listen to my hands first before I put the ideas on the screen. If they say ?We?re good!? it?s a typing day. If they say ?Ow! For the love of?? then I fire up the Dragon and speak my deepest, spiciest thoughts into its waiting ears.

Excerpt from Baby, You?re Cold InsideBy Ivy Bateman

?

?Why?d you bring me here?? I gesture to the circle of trees.

?So you assume that I arranged this??

?Well, I don?t see any other magic, frost people around,? I say, trying to keep my sarcastic tone in check.

?Well, yes?it was me, but why aren?t you more shocked? A lot of people freak out when this kind of thing happens to them! I thought for sure that even you would be impressed to be taken back to a point in your past. But no, you?re just as full of attitude watching your past as you are in the present! The guys and I really thought we?d be able to break your hostile exterior.? He genuinely seems hurt, but it doesn?t faze me.

?The guys? What guys?? I put my hands on my hips and face him.

?Yes, the guys, well and some girls, my co-workers, we who work for St. Jude.?

?St. Jude.?

?Yes,? he says, his voice filled with pride

?The saint for hopeless cases??

?Exactly.?

Our banter is interrupted by a loud groan. We look over at Cory the rutting wonder and past Lily. I can tell Phillip assumes the noise came from Cory, but I remember it was me, expressing my sour mood. This guy had one move; put it in, pull it out and repeat. It got old fast.

I shake my head and look back at Phillip. ?They can?t see us, right??

?No, they can?t see us, or hear us, or anything like that. So getting back to St. Jude??

?Yes, ok?you work for the saint of hopeless causes, Phillip. I got that. So why are you here? Oh wait!? I put my hand up to stop him from talking. ?You and the guys think I am a hopeless case or cause or whatever! That?s a riot! Are you here to help me??

Frozen Phillip momentarily transitions into assistant Phillip. He looks down at his feet and scrunches his face. He appears embarrassed. I laugh loudly.

?You are! That?s insane! I don?t need any help!?

?Well, Lily, we disagree,? he starts speaking very slowly, as if he was talking to a child. ?We?ve been watching you for quite a few years. Your attitude toward your fellow man has been a bit?off kilter for more than a little while and we think it?s time to intervene. Most people who are not very nice eventually have an epiphany, a sort of a wakeup call and change their ways, but not you. You seem to thrive on making people miserable, but in the end it?s not going to help you.? Phillip stops and looks into my eyes. He?s probably trying to see if this is moving me at all. I stare blankly back at him, crossing my arms under my breasts.

?And?? I snap at him.

Phillip swallows before he continues. ?And every Christmas season, because at this time of the year people are often at their kindest, we are all given a ?hopeless case,? a person to turn around. This year I was given you as my project. I?ve been sent by the powers that be to help you find your kinder side. We think that somewhere under your cold exterior lies a warm heart, a gentler person and we?d like to bring that out in you.?

I howl with laughter. ?Wow, Phillip, do I feel sorry for you! How?d you get stuck with me? Did you draw the short straw?? I?m laughing so hard I?m in tears, but I stop soon after. The snow suit is too tight for a lot of mirth.

?Lily, I?m quite serious.?

?Oh I believe you, my dear. Don?t worry. The icy get up, the trip to the past, it?s all very dramatic, but come on, Phillip! Why on earth do you and your guys care about one bitchy woman? Besides, I don?t think I?m a hopeless case. I think I?m fabulous. You?re wasting your time. Aren?t there people who have seriously hopeless cases that you could be working on??

He smiles brightly. ?See right there! The fact that you can think of people other than yourself, that you can imagine there are suffering people who need help shows that you have a bit of warmth in your soul.?

I scoff at him. ?No it doesn?t. Phillip, I think most people are hopeless. If you helped people based on what I think, you?d never stop working. The only person I care about is me.? I pat his frozen cheek and walk over to watch the action in the center of the trees.

Industry Experts & Eater Friends on Restaurant Breakups - Year In ...

Our 2012 survey is coming to a close today. We asked our friends, industry types, bloggers, and food lovers to describe the dining in Miami over the past year, from Biggest Dining Surprises to Best Meals. Readers, please add your thoughts to the comments.

getRepositoryImage-3.aspx.jpg[Photo Courtesy of CitieSUNdercovers]

Q: Were there any restaurants that you broke up with in 2012 -- eg, places you stopped going to?

Chelsea Olson, Miami Editor, Eater Miami: Not really. I make an effort to constantly try new places so it's hard to have any I've broken up with.

Frodnesor, of Food For Thought: A Miami Food Blog: Not by choice. But plenty of favorites closed on me. Sra. Martinez, Sustain and Red Light will all be missed.

Sara, Editor for Urbandaddy Miami: I took a break from Carpaccio in Bal Harbour, couldn't deal with the rushed service and ridiculously bad wine list.

Ryan Roman, of Miami's Restaurant Power Rankings: Each year I stop going to the places that go out of business. I'm stubborn like that. This year I am angry at the restaurant gods (I'm not talking about you, Lee Schrager) for closing Red Light and Sustain. Apparently, calling a restaurant Sustain does not mean that it will, well, sustain. At least Red Light was aptly named, although I'm sad to see it go.

Cari, of Fatgirl Hedonist: I didn't break up with any restaurants, I put restaurants in time out. Most recently, Pride & Joy was a big disappointment for me and it will be a long while before I go back.

Steven, of Chowfather: No Comment.

Liz, Editor for Thrillist Miami: Morgan's. It used to be one of my brunch go-tos, but once spots like Blue Collar and Acme came in to my life, we were over.

Aleksandra Marcotte, Eater Contributor: Joey's; once a favorite, in the last year I found the restaurant stuck in a bout of depersonalization. Lackluster service and food ensure a forgettable experience. Sugarcane; food fare here is simply an over-zealous serving of improvised food trends. It storms together raw bar flair, robatta grill torch and artisanal traces, leaving the diner in a flavor frenzy.

National Rifle Association vows to fight arms trade treaty at U.N.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The leading U.S. pro-gun group, the National Rifle Association, has vowed to fight a draft international treaty to regulate the $70 billion global arms trade and dismissed suggestions that a recent U.S. school shooting bolstered the case for such a pact.

The U.N. General Assembly voted on Monday to restart negotiations in mid-March on the first international treaty to regulate conventional arms trade after a drafting conference in July collapsed because the U.S. and other nations wanted more time. Washington supported Monday's U.N. vote.

U.S. President Barack Obama has come under intense pressure to tighten domestic gun control laws after the December 14 shooting massacre of 20 children and six educators at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. His administration has since reiterated its support for a global arms treaty that does not curtail U.S. citizens' rights to own weapons.

Arms control campaigners say one person every minute dies as a result of armed violence and a convention is needed to prevent illicitly traded guns from pouring into conflict zones and fueling wars and atrocities.

In an interview with Reuters, NRA President David Keene said the Newtown massacre has not changed the powerful U.S. gun lobby's position on the treaty. He also made clear that the Obama administration would have a fight on its hands if it brought the treaty to the U.S. Senate for ratification.

"We're as opposed to it today as we were when it first appeared," he said on Thursday. "We do not see anything in terms of the language and the preamble as being any kind of guarantee of the American people's rights under the Second Amendment."

The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects the right to bear arms. Keene said the pact could require the U.S. government to enact legislation to implement it, which the NRA fears could lead to tighter restrictions on gun ownership.

He added that such a treaty was unlikely to win the two-thirds majority in the U.S. Senate necessary for approval.

"This treaty is as problematic today in terms of ratification in the Senate as it was six months ago or a year ago," Keene said. Earlier this year a majority of senators wrote to Obama urging him to oppose the treaty.

U.N. delegates and gun-control activists say the July treaty negotiations fell apart largely because Obama, fearing attacks from Republican rival Mitt Romney before the November 6 election if his administration was seen as supporting the pact, sought to kick the issue past the U.S. vote.

U.S. officials have denied those allegation.

The NRA claimed credit for the July failure, calling it at the time "a big victory for American gun owners."

NRA IS 'TELLING LIES'

The main reason the arms trade talks are taking place at all is that the United States - the world's biggest arms trader, which accounts for more than 40 percent of global transfers in conventional arms - reversed U.S. policy on the issue after Obama was first elected and decided in 2009 to support a treaty.

Supporters of the treaty accuse the NRA of deceiving the American public about the pact, which they say will have no impact on U.S. domestic gun ownership and would apply only to exports. Last week, Amnesty International launched a campaign to counter what it said were NRA distortions about the treaty.

"The NRA is telling lies about the arms treaty to try to block U.S. government support," Michelle Ringuette of Amnesty International USA said about the campaign. "The NRA's leadership must stop interfering in U.S. foreign policy on behalf of the arms industry."

Jeff Abramson of Control Arms said that as March approaches, "the NRA is going to be challenged in ways it never has before and that can affect the way things go" with the U.S. government.

The draft treaty under discussion specifically excludes arms-related "matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any State."

Among its key provisions is a requirement that governments make compliance with human rights norms a condition for foreign arms sales. It would also have states ban arms transfers when there is reason to believe weapons or ammunition might be diverted to problematic recipients or end up on illicit markets.

Keene said the biggest problem with the treaty is that it regulates civilian arms, not just military weapons.

According to the Small Arms Survey, roughly 650 million of the 875 million weapons in the world are in the hands of civilians. That, arms control advocates say, is why any arms trade treaty must regulate both military and civilian weapons.

Keene said the NRA would actively participate in the fight against the arms trade treaty in the run-up to the March negotiations. "We will be involved," he warned, adding that it was not clear if the NRA would address U.N. delegates directly as the group did in July.

The NRA has successfully lobbied members of Congress to stop major new gun restrictions in the United States since the 1994 assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. It also gives financial backing to pro-gun candidates.

EXPLOSIVE ISSUE

European and other U.N. delegates who support the arms trade treaty told Reuters on condition of anonymity they hoped Newtown would boost support for the convention in the United States, where gun control is an explosive political issue.

"Newtown has opened the debate within the United States on weapons controls in ways that it has not been opened in the past," Abramson said, adding that "the conversation within the U.S. will give the (Obama) administration more leeway."

Keene rejected the idea of bringing the Newtown tragedy into the discussion of an arms trade treaty.

"I find it interesting that some of the folks that advocate the treaty say it would have no impact whatever within the United States but that it needs to be passed to prevent another occurrence of a school shooting such as took place in Newtown," he said. "Both of those positions can't be correct."

Obama administration officials have tried to explain to U.S. opponents of the arms trade pact that the treaty under discussion would not affect domestic gun sales and ownership.

"Our objectives for the ATT (arms trade treaty) have not changed," a U.S. official told Reuters. "We seek a treaty that fights illicit arms trafficking and proliferation, protects the sovereign right of states to conduct legitimate arms trade, and meets the concerns that we have articulated throughout."

"In particular, we will not accept any treaty that infringes on the constitutional rights of U.S. citizens to bear arms," the official added.

Supporters of the treaty also worry that major arms producers like Russia, China, Iran, India, Pakistan and others could seek to render the treaty toothless by including loopholes and making key provisions voluntary, rather than mandatory.

The United States, like all other U.N. member states, can effectively veto the treaty since the negotiations will be conducted on the basis of consensus. That means the treaty must receive unanimous support in order to be approved in March.

But if it fails in March, U.N. delegations can put it to a vote in the 193-nation General Assembly, where diplomats say it would likely secure the required two-thirds majority.

Gaming's folk heroes | GamesRadar

...That is true. I wasn't really thinking of Yahtzee regarding this, but even though he claims he's a "journalist" in his videos, really, his reviews are more in par of what the AVGN does than what professional reviewers do.

Then again, I think he still doesn't count because he's still paid to do that for a network, whereas James Rolfe started the whole thing on his own volition, and no company is paying him to do it, I believe.

Also, let's be frank, spoony isn't nearly popular (or talented, IMO.) enough to warrant an entry here. I know him only because he was part of the site The Nostalgia critic is in, and i get the feeling most people that know him is because of that, and not so much because of his own merits, honestly.

Refill Your Travel Toothpaste Bottles with a DIY Adapter

Refill Your Travel Toothpaste Bottles with a DIY AdapterTravel-sized toiletries are often more expensive relative to their normal-sized counterparts. Reader ungullible shares a trick for refilling your travel-sized toothpaste bottles.

When we noted that children-sized toothpaste was TSA-compatible, ungullible shared an even cheaper solution: buy one travel-sized bottle and refill it.

I took two flip-top toothpaste lids, cut off the lids, and glued the top openings together to create a refill adapter. So now when my travel sized toothpaste tube gets empty, I use my adapter to connect the travel tube to my full-sized tube, squeeze, and refill.

We couldn't get ungullible to respond with a picture, but it's pretty easy to see what this would look like: two flip-top lids detached from their tubes and glued together at the "mouth." With some finagling, you could probably refill any toothpaste tube without an "adapter," but this trick would certainly make the process easier.

Kresta In The Afternoon: Why ?Gay Marriage? is Not Inevitable

marriage_dictionary

?

Election Day was a drubbing for marriage. The ballot initiatives to protect marriage lost by over 4% in Maine, Minnesota, Washington State, and Maryland. Those who support same-sex ?marriage? reportedly spent over $33 million, while those who defend marriage spent just over $10 million.

Many friends have said that same-sex marriage is inevitable. It is not. I have confidence that fence-sitters will enter the fray in support of traditional marriage. As we continue to debate this issue, three important forces can shift the outcome in favor of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Consider first, public opinion; second, the methods and the message of LGBT activists; and third, reality.

Public Opinion Gives Marriage a Fighting Chance
The American public offers differing levels of assent to same-sex marriage, depending on how the survey questions are worded. Psychologically, it matters how questions are asked.
Consider these facts:
1. Data from the New Family Structures Study (NFSS) shows 24% of the young-adult population on the fence, saying they?re ?not sure? when asked whether ?it should be legal for gays and lesbians to marry in America.? There?s more support than antagonism, but not a majority on either side, given the nearly one-quarter who remain on the sidelines.
2. A national post-election survey conducted on Election Day by The Polling Company, Inc., showed that 60% of American voters agree that ?marriage is between one man and one woman,? while only 34% disagree. Another poll two months earlier showed that 57% were in agreement.
3. After their Election Day victories, same-sex marriage advocates stated that they will continue to prioritize expanding the legal recognition of same-sex relationships as marriages through legislatures and the courts, not through public vote. This is a continuation of their past policy that avoided putting the issue up for a direct citizen vote (the ballot initiatives in Maryland, Washington, and Minnesota were initiated by supporters of traditional marriage; only Maine was their choice to repeal our side?s ballot measure of 2009). This indicates their lack of confidence in their ability to get enough votes.
4. Six New York state senators were ousted from office after they abandoned their constituents to vote in favor of same-sex marriage. Five of those senators lost their re-election bids this year, in large part due to their change of position on marriage; the sixth retired rather than face re-election.
5. ?Third Day,? a Democratic organization?s own survey revealed that on a scale of 0 ? 10, with 10 being the most in favor, 26% labeled themselves 9 ? 10 in favor of same-sex marriage, compared to 30% who said they were 0 -1; 44% were somewhere in the middle. Only 32% said they would be glad if same-sex couples could marry; 37% said that would not be acceptable.
Despite large sums spent?as happened this November when gay activists spent a whopping $33 million?the notion that marriage is between a man and a woman continues to hold sway; and, no matter how hard activists try, it seems impossible to strip it away from the human heart of a very substantial portion of people. It is the reality of common sense deeply embedded in the human heart.

Methods and Message
Efforts by the LGBT movement to make school curricula more sympathetic to the gay agenda continue to raise concerns among parents. So much so that leaders of the LGBT movement have had to adjust. In the November 7 article in Slate, titled ?How Marriage Finally Won at the Polls,? Nathaniel Frank explains how the coalition of LGBT activists working to pass gay marriage in Maine and Maryland revised their message strategy to counter the ?Princess? ad prepared by Frank Schubert. Here is what Nathaniel Frank writes:

Thalia Zepatos of Freedom To Marry, who oversees the coalition?s messaging research, describes another revelation from the data. Schubert?s misleading ?princess? ads implied that schools could usurp the role of parents in teaching pro-gay values, but that was wrong. As Zepatos and her team pored over the research, they watched conversations in which voters spoke among themselves and kept circling back to the same insight: Parents are the parents, and they teach their kids values at home. The challenge, Zepatos and her colleagues determined, was to reassure voters about this conclusion. Parents knew they had the control, but the Schubert ads?which in the past have killed a pro-gay lead in the polls at the last minute?made them anxious about losing it.
LGBT activists have had to go out of their way to reassure parents they are in charge of teaching values to their children, given the powerful evidence provided by Schubert, and experienced by many parents.
A 2011 Research Report issued by the Democratic think tank Third Way, and used to develop the 2012 campaign to win the state ballot initiatives, stated among its six key findings that: ?It is crucial to include reaffirmation of religious liberty protections as a significant part of supporters? message framework.? And as the public is aware, it is increasingly being proclaimed by politicians working to pass gay marriage that religious liberty protections are being provided.
But this is misleading. As Jane Robbins and Emmett McGroarty show in their Public Discourse article ?Mandating Our Religious Freedom,? the current Progressive movement, of which LGBT activists are a core constituency, is clearly moving in the opposite direction. And in a more recent Public Discourse article ?A War on Religion?? Bruce Hausknecht provides examples contrary to the message LGBT leaders are now using to win.

Reality: Distinguishing What Is Myth from What Is True
The Left now has the White House (for four more years), in addition to the universities, Hollywood, large portions of the media, and high-tech industry.
But can this reliance on the power of the elite institutions be sustained in the long run? Perhaps, if the majority of the people come to accept that to flourish one is to be allowed to do whatever one wants regarding sexual practices. I submit that the majority of people do not grasp that this is the message of the LGBT movement, and as they do grasp it, they will shift to the view that our sexuality has boundaries and is ordained toward something greater than whatever we want.
Don?t take it from me; take it from Dan Savage as quoted by Mark Oppenheimer?s New York Times article, ?Married with Infidelities?:

Savage believes monogamy is right for many couples. But he believes that our discourse about it, and about sexuality more generally, is dishonest. Some people need more than one partner, he writes, just as some people need flirting, others need to be whipped, others need lovers of both sexes. We can?t help our urges, and we should not lie to our partners about them. In some marriages, talking honestly about our needs will forestall or obviate affairs; in other marriages, the conversation may lead to an affair, but with permission. In both cases, honesty is the best policy.
Social science research shows us, and a growing body of journalistic reporting reveals, that gay men are not interested in permanent monogamous relationships. Lesbians are more apt to be monogamous, but less apt to remain together long-term. One myth that LGBT activists push is that marriage is what most homosexual people want. Will the provision of marriage cause gay and lesbian Americans to enter lasting and stable relationships en masse? Unlikely. Another myth that the activists push is the ?no differences? thesis: the claim that there are no differences in outcomes for children parented by heterosexual couples or homosexual couples.
The sonogram helped people see the unborn child in the womb and realize it is alive; it made a powerful case for life. Similarly, we have to expose the myths of the gay marriage movement. Several events of 2012 have brought us closer to that goal.
First, in a peer-reviewed research paper published in the prestigious journal Social Science Research, titled ?Same-sex parenting and children?s outcomes: A closer examination of the American psychological association?s brief on lesbian and gay parenting,? Professor Loren Marks of Louisiana State University?s School of Human Ecology reviews the 59 studies referenced in the 2005 American Psychological Association brief that supported the ?no differences? thesis. Marks concludes:
To restate, not one of the 59 studies referenced in the 2005 APA Brief compares a large, random, representative sample of lesbian or gay parents and their children with a large, random, representative sample of married parents and their children. The available data, which are drawn primarily from small convenience samples, are insufficient to support a strong generalizable claim either way. Such a statement would not be grounded in science.
Second, Mark Regnerus?s New Family Structures Study (NFSS) uses the second-largest nationally representative sample (ever) to measure a host of outcomes in which the adult children of intact biological families fare better than any other combination, including children raised by a mother or a father who has been in a gay or a lesbian relationship. Its results also show something striking and unexpected: only two out of 15,000 young Americans screened for the survey reported spending their entire childhood with two lesbian parents; none reported the same with two gay fathers. Children, of course, don?t fare as well when there is a lack of stability in the home.
Third, scores of people who read the Regnerus study were inspired to reveal even more about the gay subculture; and, yes, by their accounts, the Regnerus study depicts reality far better than shows like Modern Family and The New Normal. Surprised? Most of these people will remain nameless, rather than submit themselves to unwanted hostility. But expect more of them to step up as witnesses to the lies that undergird the movement for same-sex marriage. See, for example, Robert Lopez?s essay ?Growing Up With Two Moms: The Untold Children?s View.?
Fourth, legal cases are mounting against the discrimination, harassment, and loss of jobs for people who do not support same-sex marriage. A new growth industry is the pro bono legal associations to protect freedom of conscience and freedom of religion, such as the Alliance Defending Freedom, the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, and more recently the newly created Freedom of Conscience Fund. It is very laudable that trained professionals are stepping up to defend civil liberties; one may hope this will continue to awaken the conscience of the public.
Ultimately, the future of marriage will not be decided by our likes or our dislikes. Human suffering will periodically remind us that losing a healthy marriage culture produces all kinds of practical costs and penalties. These are measured by those social pathologies that impose a great weight on our society, such as depression, addiction, violence, and illness, as well as missed educational and economic opportunities. However you slice it, the intact biological family continues to be the best ?Department of Health, Education and Welfare? when it comes to raising the next generation. Marriage is worth fighting for, even if we lose. Because remember, LGBT activists will lose too as they bring us all down. And that is a sobering thought.
