Mass. wants men to know they can get breast cancer
Gov. Deval Patrick wants Massachusetts men to know that they also can get breast cancer.
Men rarely get breast cancer, but those who do often don?t survive as long as women, mainly because they don?t even realize they can get it and are slow to recognize the warning signs.
A recent study found that men?s breast tumors were larger at diagnosis, more advanced and more likely to have spread to other parts of the body.
Many men have no idea that they can get breast cancer, and some doctors are in the dark, too, dismissing symptoms that would be an automatic red flag in women.
Patrick is hoping to change that in Massachusetts beginning Monday, when he signs a bill designating the third week of October as Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week.

Romney: Military strike on Iran may be unnecessary
BOSTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney says he doesn't believe military action will be necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
The Republican presidential nominee says he discussed the issue with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (neh-ten-YAH'-hoo) by telephone Friday afternoon. Romney later told reporters traveling with him that it's unclear whether there is any difference between their so-called "red lines" on when launching military action against Iran would be appropriate.
Romney says he can't completely take the military option off the table because Iran needs to take the threat seriously. But he says he does not believe force will ultimately be needed.
Netanyahu argues that an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities may be the only answer.
President Barack Obama also spoke to Netanyahu on Friday.
NEW YORK (AP) ? R.A. Dickey was so close yet so far from 20 wins, faltering from fatigue and fuming he had failed to seize the moment.
"About the fourth or fifth inning I felt exasperated. I was not myself today for the most part," he said.
"And then I'd come out for an at-bat and I would hear this kind of growing surge, and it really was neat. I mean I don't know if I've ever experienced something like that before. Maybe I never will again. Although I wasn't distracted from the moment, how could you not be motivated to go out there and give the fans and, well, your teammates and yourself all that you have?" he said.
Absorbing the energy from 31,506 fans at the final home game of another sorry Mets season, Dickey summoned his strength and concentration. David Wright boosted him into the lead with a tiebreaking three-run homer, and Dickey led New York over Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 Thursday to become the first knuckleballer in more than three decades to win 20 games.
"It's like a big exhale," Dickey said.
Throwing his hard knuckler at up to 78 mph, Dickey (20-6) allowed three runs and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings, tying his career high with 13 strikeouts and walking two.
With New York winding up its fourth straight losing season, he capped a trinity of highlights that began with the first Mets no-hitter by Johan Santana in June and continued with Wright setting the team career hits record on Wednesday.
"This was about R.A. today," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "It was about him. It was about his connection with the fans, the connection with the city. And so I said use that."
Quite a turnaround from 2010, when Dickey began the season at Triple-A Buffalo and had to prove he belonged in the majors. And from last year, when he was 8-13.
The 37-year-old had never won more than 11 games in any previous season is just 61-56 in his big league career.
"I was the picture of mediocrity by my own admission," he said.
But in the late stages of his career, he has mastered the knuckler ? a pitch that has flummoxed most of those who have tried and must survive on fastballs.
"I think everybody here today would have taken one swing where they thought they were going to crush one and they swung right throw it," Pirates outfielder Travis Snider said.
Dickey had never set a numerical goal for his pitching.
"It's just much more for me if I can really harness the moment and suck the marrow out of every second, then I've done what I want to do and I can be satisfied," he said.
Dickey became the first 20-game winner for the pitching-proud Mets since Frank Viola in 1990 and the first knuckleballer to accomplish the feat since Houston's Joe Niekro in 1980, according to STATS LLC. Viola also reached 20 with a win over the Pirates.
New York had altered its rotation, giving Dickey a chance to win 20 at home. The fans gave Dickey his first ovation when he walked to the bullpen to warm up. He waved his cap as they applauded when he walked off after his 128th and final pitch ? his most in eight years ? and got a final round of applause when he returned to the field for a postgame interview that was broadcast over the stadium sound system.
"Growing up, you just want to compete. And once you have the weaponry to compete, you want to be really good," he said. "And then when you're really good, you want to be supernaturally good. And I think for me there's been this steady kind of metamorphosis from just surviving to being a craftsman. Ultimately the hope is to be an artist with what you do."
The milestone following two life-changing events. He authored a book last spring, "Wherever I Wind Up," revealing he was a sexual abuse victim when he was 8. And he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness for the Bombay Teen Challenge.
"When you get to a comfort level about who you are and you don't have secrets and you feel the freedom to be who you feel like you're called to be, that's something," Dickey said. "Is this the result of the cathartic experience of writing the book, I don't know. I'm going to say this, it certainly hasn't hurt. And to be comfortable in your own skin, which I was not for so long in my life, there's something to that."
His memorable year began with a climb to the 19,341-foot Uhuru Peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
"He was taking his career and putting it in jeopardy, putting it in harm's way," Collins said. "You don't know what's going to happen. But it wasn't about him. It has never been about him."
Dickey joined Washington's Gio Gonzalez as the top winners in the majors ? until Gonzalez beat the Phillies to improve his record to 21-8. They figure to duel for the NL Cy Young Award.
Dickey fell behind 2-0 and 3-1 and overcame an outstanding, climbing catch by Snider more than 2 feet above the right-field wall that robbed Mike Baxter of a tying home run in the second inning.
Former Texas teammate Rod Barajas hit an opposite-field RBI double that hopped the right-field wall in the second, and Jordy Mercer following with a run-scoring infield single.
Ike Davis led off the bottom half with his 31st homer, but Barajas boosted the lead to 3-1 when he homered on an 0-2 pitch in the fourth, a drive over the old 16-foot wall in left. Kevin Correia (11-11) gave up Scott Hairston's RBI single in the fourth and Murphy's tying single in the fifth before Wright hit an opposite-field drive to right for his 21st home run this season and a 6-3 lead.
Dickey was watching on TV in the clubhouse at the time.
"There were times he picked us up and really carried us as a team on his back," said Wright, happy to provide the hit that made the difference.
Dickey said after the seventh inning he was "pooped," but Collins sent him out for the eighth.
"I said, look, this ballpark is filled with energy today. Use it to your advantage," the manager recalled. "These people deserve to see you walk off the mound."
Responded Dickey: "Don't leave me hanging."
Jon Rauch, pitching on his 34th birthday, came in after a two-out walk, finished the eighth and allowed Alex Presley's two-run homer in the nervy ninth. Bobby Parnell retired Josh Harrison on a groundout and Jose Tabata on a flyout for his fifth save.
Dickey came back on the field for handshakes and soaked in the fans' love.
"I feel it in my face. I don't know if that makes any sense," Dickey said. "I want to get emotional. It's hard because we've had the type of season that we've had."
His family stayed back in Nashville, Tenn. ? the kids are in school ? but planned to meet him in Atlanta on Thursday night for the start of the Mets' final trip. He had some close friends at the game.
Through all the tough times, Dickey pictured this type of success in his mind.
"I never abandoned hope. I always held that out," he said. "My hope always outweighed my doubt, and that's what kind of kept me going."

After many years of painstaking work, Japanese researchers prove third time's a charm
The most unambiguous data to date on the elusive 113th atomic element has been obtained by researchers at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-based Science (RNC). A chain of six consecutive alpha decays, produced in experiments at the RIKEN Radioisotope Beam Factory (RIBF), conclusively identifies the element through connections to well-known daughter nuclides. The groundbreaking result, reported in the Journal of Physical Society of Japan, sets the stage for Japan to claim naming rights for the element.
The search for superheavy elements is a difficult and painstaking process. Such elements do not occur in nature and must be produced through experiments involving nuclear reactors or particle accelerators, via processes of nuclear fusion or neutron absorption. Since the first such element was discovered in 1940, the United States, Russia and Germany have competed to synthesize more of them. Elements 93 to 103 were discovered by the Americans, elements 104 to 106 by the Russians and the Americans, elements 107 to 112 by the Germans, and the two most recently named elements, 114 and 116, by cooperative work of the Russians and Americans.
With their latest findings, associate chief scientist Kosuke Morita and his team at the RNC are set follow in these footsteps and make Japan the first country in Asia to name an atomic element. For many years Morita's team has conducted experiments at the RIKEN Linear Accelerator Facility in Wako, near Tokyo, in search of the element, using a custom-built gas-filled recoil ion separator (GARIS) coupled to a position-sensitive semiconductor detector to identify reaction products. On August 12, those experiments bore fruit: zinc ions travelling at 10% the speed of light collided with a thin bismuth layer to produce a very heavy ion followed by a chain of six consecutive alpha decays identified as products of an isotope of the 113th element (Figure 1).
While the team also detected element 113 in experiments conducted in 2004 and 2005, earlier results identified only four decay events followed by the spontaneous fission of dubnium-262 (element 105). In addition to spontaneous fission, the isotope dubnium-262 is known to also decay via alpha decay, but this was not observed, and naming rights were not granted since the final products were not well known nuclides at the time. The decay chain detected in the latest experiments, however, takes the alternative alpha decay route, with data indicating that dubnium decayed into lawrencium-258 (element 103) and finally into mendelevium-254 (element 101). The decay of dubnium-262 to lawrencium-258 is well known and provides unambiguous proof that element 113 is the origin of the chain.
Combined with their earlier experimental results, the team's groundbreaking discovery of the six-step alpha decay chain promises to clinch their claim to naming rights for the 113th element.
"For over 9 years, we have been searching for data conclusively identifying element 113, and now that at last we have it, it feels like a great weight has been lifted from our shoulders," Morita said. "I would like to thank all the researchers and staff involved in this momentous result, who persevered with the belief that one day, 113 would be ours. For our next challenge, we look to the uncharted territory of element 119 and beyond."

In addition to spontaneous fission, the isotope dubnium-262 is known to also decay via alpha decay, but this was not observed, and naming rights were not granted since the final products were not well known nuclides at the time. The decay chain detected in the latest experiments, however, takes the alternative alpha decay route, with data indicating that dubnium decayed into lawrencium-258 (element 103) and finally into mendelevium-254 (element 101). The decay of dubnium-262 to lawrencium-258 is well known and provides unambiguous proof that element 113 is the origin of the chain.
Combined with their earlier experimental results, the team's groundbreaking discovery of the six-step alpha decay chain promises to clinch their claim to naming rights for the 113th element.
"For over 9 years, we have been searching for data conclusively identifying element 113, and now that at last we have it, it feels like a great weight has been lifted from our shoulders," Morita said. "I would like to thank all the researchers and staff involved in this momentous result, who persevered with the belief that one day, 113 would be ours. For our next challenge, we look to the uncharted territory of element 119 and beyond."

Vivus says obesity drug unlikely to get EU committee backing
(Reuters) - Vivus Inc said its obesity drug, the first diet pill launched in the United States in over a decade, is unlikely to be recommended by a European regulatory committee, sending its shares down 14 percent.
Safety issues associated with earlier obesity drugs, such as the notorious "fen-phen" diet-drug combo, led to health regulators being cautious with approving such pills.
"An eventual approval in EU seems problematic, given that the issues raised by (the EU committee) seem more related to the lack of comfort with phentermine in Europe, rather than the data itself," Cowen and Co analyst Simos Simeonidis said.
"A situation that we view as difficult to ameliorate."
Like fen-phen, Vivus's Qsiva also contains the appetite suppressant phentermine in combination with the anti-seizure drug topiramate.
An earlier obesity pill, Acomplia, launched in Europe had to be withdrawn by its manufacturer Sanofi in 2008 due to an increased risk of suicide.
A formal decision on Qsiva from the European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use is expected following its October meeting, Vivus said on Friday.
If a negative recommendation is issued and depending upon the issues raised, Vivus said it would either resubmit its marketing application at a later date or appeal the decision and request a re-examination.
Vivus's President Peter Tam said the committee raised questions on both the drug's safety and efficacy, as well as the company's risk minimization plans.
"The largest impact on Vivus is that it may remove at least some of the acquisition premium assigned by some investors, since a lack of ex-U.S. revenue makes an acquisition by a large pharma less likely, albeit possible," Cowen's Simeonidis said.
Vivus's drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in July under the brand name Qsymia. The regulator had earlier in June approved Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc's Belviq, the first diet pill to win approval in 13 years.
While Vivus launched Qsymia in the United States on September 17, Arena is expected to launch Belviq early next year.
Vivus shares, which touched a low of $20.35, later recouped some of their losses to trade down 11 percent at $21.10 on the Nasdaq on Friday.
Arena shares were up 4 percent at $9.15 on the same exchange.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Grainy surveillance footage released Thursday shows Lindsay Lohan's car driving toward a man who says she hit him outside a nightclub and kept going, but the blur used to conceal witnesses' faces partially obscures the scene.
The black-and-white video, released by police, shows Lohan's Porsche turning from a Manhattan street onto an alley around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday as Jose Rodriguez passes in front of the car and apparently is struck. Rodriguez, a 34-year-old restaurant worker from Jersey City, N.J., stays on his feet and walks after the car as it drives away.
Rodriguez called 911 and was hospitalized with a knee injury. He said he was coming from his job at a restaurant inside the nearby Maritime Hotel when he was struck and was in a lot of pain. He criticized Lohan and her entourage.
"They acted like I was nothing," he told the Daily News. "That no one could touch her because she was so rich and powerful."
The 26-year-old actress later was arrested as she left the nightclub at the Dream Hotel in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, police said. No alcohol was involved, they said.
Lohan was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and causing injury. She was given a ticket and was scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 23.
Her publicist Steve Honig said he was confident the claims being made against the troubled "Mean Girls" star would be proved untrue.
This summer in California, Lohan was involved in a car accident that sent her and an assistant to a hospital, but no one was seriously injured. The accident remains under investigation.
In May, she was cleared of allegations that she struck a Hollywood nightclub manager with her car.
