September auto sales seen up 9 percent (Reuters)

DETROIT (Reuters) ? September U.S. auto sales are seen rising to their highest since April when the earthquake in Japan began to impact inventory and demand, but a weak economic outlook will curb the pace of the industry's recovery in the coming months.

Japanese automakers Honda Motor Co Ltd (7267.T) and Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) will finally have enough inventory to compete in the market and both will show gains in September market share, particularly Honda, said Jessica Caldwell, an analyst with Edmunds.com.

The March 11 earthquake in Japan clipped the recovery of the auto industry from the 2008-2009 recession that led to the lowest per capita sales rate since World War II.

September results "should be the cleanest number we have seen since April," without the Japan earthquake impact, said Peter Nesvold, an analyst with Jefferies & Co on a conference call on Thursday.

J.D. Power & Associates and Edmunds.com each forecast 12.9 million vehicle sales for September on the seasonally adjusted annualized rate the industry watches, up 9 percent from September 2010 and up 7 percent from last month.

That would be near the 13.1 million vehicles annualized sales rate from the first four months of the year.

Auto sales, which will be reported on October 3, are an early indicator each month of U.S. consumer demand.

Weak economic indicators are dragging down what should be a more robust recovery based on deferred purchases from as far back as 2008, said Caldwell and Lacey Plache of Edmunds, who spoke on the same conference call as Jefferies' Nesvold.

Mike Jackson, chief executive of AutoNation Inc (AN.N), the largest U.S. auto dealer group, said last week he is convinced that auto sales will rise in the fourth quarter of the year, despite a weak economy.

Honda's U.S. sales have suffered the most since April and the automaker will have the highest gains in September, by a percentage point or more in market share, said TrueCar.com. TrueCar said Honda's sales will show a rise of about 15 percent from August.

TrueCar and Edmunds both forecast General Motors Co (GM.N) will take about 20 percent of the U.S. new vehicle market share, followed by Ford Motor Co (F.N) at 17 percent, Toyota and Chrysler Group LLC near 12 percent, followed by Honda and Nissan Motor Co Ltd (7201.T), both near 9 percent.

INCENTIVES NOTCH UP

Sales incentives rose in September and will continue to rise along with deliveries to auto dealerships, Caldwell said.

Caldwell said on Thursday that incentives will not rise precipitously, echoing what Jackson said last week.

"The incentives will be strong between now and year-end," said Jackson. "Market communication (advertising) will be strong and the message will be everybody's back in business and if you need a car come on in and get it."

Industrywide, September sales incentives will show a rise of about 2.6 percent from August, Caldwell said, with Honda leading the way with a 15 percent rise.

Nesvold said the strong yen leaves the Japanese little room to boost incentives much and they will spend more on advertising to regain lost customers.

U.S. pickup trucks sales will show a rise to their largest share of retail purchases since last December, Ford sales analyst George Pipas said.

Caldwell said pickup truck and SUV sales are expected to continue taking a larger share of the market as winter approaches.

Average U.S. gasoline prices have fallen about 4.5 percent from a month ago, according to the AAA motor club.

Edmunds lowered its full-year 2011 forecast to 12.6 million vehicles, up from 2010's 11.6 million in sales, but down from the annual average of nearly 17 million vehicles in the decade prior to 2008 when the downturn began.

Video: Control benefits costs through plan design | Calgary Debt ...

For benefits plan sponsors worried about the increasing costs of their plans, the legislation regarding generic drug price reductions (currently implemented in five provinces) may seem like a saving grace.

But not so fast, warns Shawn O?Brien, senior consultant, health and benefits, with Aon Hewitt. He warns that the savings might not be as high as you think, since some drugs aren?t subject to the regulations, and expensive drugs such as biologics are becoming more the norm, rather than the exception.

The trend line is moving up, and plan sponsors need new solutions.

In this BenefitsCanadaTV interview, O?Brien shares his thoughts on how plan sponsors can contain costs, and suggests possible solutions such as re-examining the terms of your contract and implementing higher deductibles.

Watch the video to find out what O?Brien had to say about controlling your costs through plan design.

You Can Make Money From AdSense Revenue | WEB-DESIGN ...

It?s very easy to make money with Google AdSense but most people who use AdSense advertising on their blogs and websites only make a trickle of pennies every day, it never amounts to much. Lots of people refuse to put AdSense on their sites because they figure the revenue from the space the ads occupy simply isn?t worth their time, better to put an ad that has the chance to bring in a more substantial amount if the visitor clicks through.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when they decide to implement AdSense on their sites is not reading Google?s AdSense blog and Google?s rules about ad placement to achieve the best click-through rates (CTRs). If you Google words like ?website heat map? you will see a lot of research has been done into how visitors read pages, and the best eye-catching places to put ads on a page. If you use one of the many WordPress plugins that handle advertising, they know where the best places are on your page to place ads, and you can simply paste your AdSense ads into any of the widgets which are then placed in those optimum positions.

The other thing that is very important is reading the AdSense rules. I come across people frequently that have had their Google AdSense accounts suspended or closed because they did not read the simple rules. Basically you can?t use underhanded techniques and try to fool people into thinking that AdSense ads are something else, and clicking on AdSense ads on your own site will get you banned fast.

There has been a lot of talk about making money from AdSense and there are a number of ?guru? courses out there saying you can make thousands a week. The only way you could possibly make thousands a week from AdSense is by having a large number of sites. One technique is to find out what advertisers are willing to pay for click-throughs, and choosing niches pertaining to those products. Some advertisers are willing to pay over $20 for a click-through, of which you will get roughly 60%, the trick is to find these high paying ads and being able to build a site around them. It takes a lot of time and research and you will have to sign up with Google to get that information, but you?ll have to anyway if you want to implement AdSense on any of your sites.

As with any kind of advertising on a website, don?t put your eggs in one shopping cart. The best is to have a mix of advertising and monitor all ads to see which ones are working effectively, i.e. you are making money from it. If a certain size shape or style of advertising or specific ads for which you are an affiliate are not producing, change them to something else, and keep monitoring until you find the right placement and ads for your site.

Are AdSense sites a good idea? Blogs and forums on specific subjects are a great way to make a successful site to monetize with AdSense ads. If the forum is password protected it may prevent the bots from crawling your site, so consider making your forums open. The key is to find subjects for blogs and forums about subjects for which AdSense advertisers are willing to pay high costs. The bloggers and forum members create a site for you about the subject you choose, they add fresh content daily and you benefit from the revenue. Again I would always add other streams of revenue to those sites, but also include AdSense advertising in prominent positions. The work involved is like any other site; you have to keep building your traffic, because traffic means money.

NASA says 'we may never know' where runaway satellite crashed

The end to the Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite that fell to Earth Saturday remains unknown due to its wide possible debris field. Best estimates suggest most of the debris fell into the ocean.

The mystery of where a runaway research satellite plunged to earth may remain just that unless NASA receives "credible" leads in the next few days as to the whereabouts of the fallen space junk, one of the agency's top scientists says.

Best estimates from several international space agencies put the reentry point of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, a bus-sized space traveler launched from the Space Shuttle in 1991, in the Pacific Ocean southwest of Washington State, in which case some 26 jagged chunks of space debris ? some weighing as much as 300 pounds ? most likely dropped into the ocean and disappeared.

"We may never know" where the satellite pieces landed, Nick Johnson, the chief scientist with NASA's Orbital Debris Program, told reporters on Saturday. So far, NASA has not been able to confirm as credible several reports from the Calgary area ? including YouTube video and Twitter accounts ? that purported to show pieces of the satellite raining down early Saturday morning.

IN PICTURES: Stuff in Earth orbit

But the agency also acknowledged that it does not know exactly when the satellite entered the earth's atmosphere, which leaves open the possibility that pieces reached land. The best guess is that the UARS fell through the atmosphere at 12:16 A.M. Saturday, which would have put a debris field up to 500 miles long off the west coast of the US. The agency acknowledged, however, that even a minor miscalculation could mean debris fell on Washington State or parts of southwestern Canada.

"Because we don't know where reentry point actually was, we don't know where debris field might be," said Dr. Johnson. "I've got no reports that I've seen that talk about people who might have recovered debris, but we'll continue to keep our eyes and ears open, and if we receive any reports like that we'll try to go verify."

Uncontrolled reentry of man-made space junk is fairly common. But the size of the UARS ? it weighed about 6 tons ? made it the largest runaway reentry of a satellite since Skylab fell in 1979, with some pieces landing in Australia.

The UARS returning uncontrolled to earth caught the public's imagination and even raised mild concern, though chances of anybody getting struck by debris were about 1 in 3,200. It also drew attention to the growing amounts of space junk orbiting the earth, as well as the sheer difficulties of tracking orbiting material as it reenters the earth's atmosphere.

Up to the last minutes before impact, NASA and other space agencies adjusted their predictions as the spacecraft seemed to skip and tumble across the outer skin of Earth's atmosphere. But more than 12 hours after orbiting space sensors could no longer find the satellite in orbit, NASA scientists lean toward the theory that at least most of the satellite chunks missed land.

"There were several folks along the western coast of North America and the US northwest and Canadian southwest that were actually looking to observe UARS as it came over, and every one of those attempts came up negative," said Mr. Johnson. "That would suggest that reentry did occur before it reached the North American coast, and most of the debris fell into the Pacific."

D-backs, Brewers and Rangers clinch on same night (AP)

Elvis Andrus took a home run trot at Rangers Ballpark, cheering a ball that landed 1,400 miles away. Prince Fielder enjoyed a victory lap at Miller Park, hugging fans along the way. Kirk Gibson pumped his fist at Chase Field, celebrating while the crowd chanted his name.

All over baseball, it was one big wrap party.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers each clinched Friday night ? only once before, on Oct. 5, 1985, had three division spots been decided on the same day, STATS LLC said.

All six divisions already locked up, still five days left in the regular season. Not since 1986, when there were only four divisions, had they all been sealed so early, STATS found.

"This kind of stuff never gets old," a goggles-wearing Michael Young said, spraying bubbly in the middle of the Texas clubhouse. "We know we're in."

The wild-card races got a little less wild, too, with Atlanta and Boston expanding their edges.

The New York Yankees, Philadelphia and Detroit previously clinched their divisions. So with a bunch of games remaining on the schedule, what's left to watch? Plenty.

Not a single playoff matchup is set yet. They may not be until the final out Wednesday night, either. Even if the Red Sox hold their 2 1/2-game edge and the Braves maintain their three-game lead, it may take tiebreakers ? records in head-to-head meetings, that is ? until fans find out the first-round pairings.

The Diamondbacks completed baseball's most dramatic turnaround, going from 65-97 last year to winning their first NL West crown since 2007. They did it in Gibson's first full season as manager.

"I don't care if it's your first year or your 10th year, it's what you set out to do," Gibson said.

Gibson, who helped the Tigers and Dodgers win World Series championships, saw his Diamondbacks earn their spot when rookie Paul Goldschmidt lined a two-run triple in the eighth inning to beat San Francisco 3-1.

Later, some of the Diamondbacks went for a celebratory dip in the pool behind the wall in right-center field.

The loss dropped the defending World Series champion Giants five games behind Atlanta.

"We are breathing. Five games left, we are still breathing," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "That is why there is no need to talk. We've still got baseball."

Milwaukee and Texas both had to stick around to let loose.

The Brewers beat Florida 4-1 at home, then waited about a half-hour until second-place St. Louis lost to Chicago 5-1 to officially take the NL Central. It was Milwaukee's first title since it won the AL East back in 1982.

Ryan Braun and Fielder homered in the win. Fielder, who previously said this probably will be his last season in Milwaukee before leaving as a free agent, took his victory lap nearly an hour after the Cubs' victory. He hugged several of the nearly 5,000 fans that stayed to party.

"I'm just glad we're able to do it, we've got a little ways to go, but I'm going to enjoy the hell out of this," he said. "Hopefully, we go all the way."

It was a similar scene in Texas. The Rangers beat Seattle 5-3, and clinched their second straight AL West title about two hours later when the Los Angeles Angels lost to Oakland 3-1.

When David DeJesus hit a solo homer for Oakland in the top of the ninth, fans at Rangers Ballpark erupted in cheers. Andrus then took a home run trot, and the Texas shortstop slid into home surrounded by many of his teammates.

Beaten by San Francisco in five games in the World Series last year, Texas is ready to try again.

"We knew what we had to do because we've been through it before," manager Ron Washington said. "Now we're back and we get another opportunity."

(AP) ? Eli Manning delivered the knockout blow after Michael Vick got knocked out of another game.

Manning threw four touchdown passes, including two to Victor Cruz, and the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Eagles 29-16 Sunday.

Vick started despite suffering a concussion in last week's 35-31 loss at Atlanta. He left with a broken right hand in the fourth quarter after helping the Eagles overcome a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to take a 16-14 lead.

It's uncertain how long the left-handed quarterback will be out. He'll have a CT scan Monday.

"I don't know anything right now except my hand is broken," Vick said.

Vick wasn't happy with the hit, either. He completed a 23-yard pass to Jeremy Maclin before taking a hard shot from Chris Canty.

"I felt I got hit late. No flag," Vick said. "At some point something catastrophic is gonna happen. Not to blame the refs, but more precautions should be taken. I'm on the ground all the time in the pocket."

Without their Pro Bowl quarterback, the Eagles (1-2) hardly look like the "Dream Team" that entered the season with Super Bowl or bust expectations.

Manning threw a pair of TD passes in the fourth quarter to rally New York. The Giants (2-1) have won two in a row and snapped a six-game losing streak against their division rivals.

"It's always good to beat those guys, especially here," Manning said. "They have good players and we new we had to come in with the same game plan as last year and just finish it this time."

In their previous meeting at the Meadowlands last December, the Eagles rallied from a 21-point deficit with 8:17 left, and won 38-31 on DeSean Jackson's 65-yard punt return for a touchdown on the last play.

The teams traded a lot of trash talk in the offseason and during the week. The Giants backed it up.

"I think I responded today," Giants safety Antrel Rolle said. "I'm not scared of anyone on the field. I thing it's more mental than physical. They tried to get in my head sticking their hands in my face, blocking me after the play, but if they want to fight, I'll fight anyone, but in between the lines, I'm too smart to get thrown out of the game."

Manning threw for 254 yards, and Ahmad Bradshaw ran for 86 and had 53 more receiving, including a TD. Filling in because Mario Manningham and Domenik Hixon are out, Cruz had three catches for 110 yards and his first two career scores.

Aaron Ross, who was benched in the second half of New York's win over St. Louis last Monday, had two interceptions that led to 14 points.

LeSean McCoy had 128 yards rushing and one TD for Philadelphia, which has blown two fourth-quarter leads in consecutive games.

After McCoy was stopped for a 3-yard loss by Michael Boley on fourth-and-1 from the Giants 43, Manning drove New York in for the go-ahead score. He tossed a 28-yard TD pass to a well-covered Cruz to put the Giants up 20-16. Jacobs ran in for the 2-point conversion to make it 22-16.

Cruz outfought Nnamdi Asomugha and Jarrad Page to make the catch near the goal line and fell into the end zone, losing the ball after he crossed.

"It means the world to me because a lot of people were saying our receivers were down and who would step up and I was happy to be that guy that stepped up to help my team," Cruz said.

Mike Kafka replaced Vick on the ensuing possession and Ross intercepted his first pass. Manning connected with Bradshaw for an 18-yard TD pass to put the game away.

Vick finished 16 of 23 for 176 yards and one interception. He ran for 31 yards. Vick looked shaky early, but made a few nice throws before leaving.

He didn't seem all that happy after the Eagles kicked a field goal to pull within 14-13 at halftime. Vick looked angry as he walked off the field, waving his arms and pointing. Jackson tried to calm him down, but Vick didn't seem interested in listening.

"He was just frustrated with the offensive line," Jackson said.

The Eagles dominated time of possession by a nearly 3-1 margin throughout the first three quarters, but didn't take the lead until the final minute of the third when Alex Henery kicked a 21-yard field goal.

It was a disappointing end to a drive that began at the 10 and stalled at the Giants 1. The Eagles had a first down at the 2 and failed on four runs to get it in. McCoy didn't get one of the handoffs.

Philadelphia got a lucky bounce on that drive. Vick ran 8 yards for a first down on third-and-6 from the 14. Vick fumbled at the end of the run, but the ball bounced forward and left tackle Jason Peters caught it in the air. Peters rumbled for 5 more yards.

Vick left the game for X-rays on his right hand after that drive and was temporarily replaced by Kafka. But he returned during a time out while Kafka was in the huddle and played one more drive before going to the bench.

Steve Smith made a crucial mistake on the first ball that came his away against his former team. Smith left the Giants for Philadelphia and returned ahead of schedule from knee surgery to be ready for Week 1. Vick's third-down pass on Philadelphia's first drive hit Smith in the hands and bounced in the air to Ross, who caught it at the Giants 8. Ross returned the interception 19 yards, and Manning needed six plays to lead New York into the end zone.

Rookie linebacker Casey Matthews, who was moved from the middle to the weakside spot earlier in the week, bit badly on a play-fake that allowed Jacobs to get wide open. Manning's perfect throw hit him in stride and the Giants went up 7-0.

Manning connected with Cruz late in the first to give New York a 14-0 lead. Cruz caught a short pass at the Giants 34, but broke Kurt Coleman's tackle and sprinted down the sideline. Cruz again got away from Coleman, when he collided with Asomugha at the Eagles 46, and the second-year pro cruised into the end zone for his first career score.

After the Giants turned it over on downs at the Eagles 29, Vick got going. He had completions of 13 and 17 yards on a drive that was finished off by McCoy's nifty 11-yard TD run. McCoy broke a tackle, cut outside and ran into the end zone to get the Eagles within 14-10.

Notes: Miami Heat star LeBron James was on the field before the game. He was in town to play in an exhibition basketball game with other NBA All-Stars at The Palestra. ... The Giants were again without Pro Bowl DE Osi Umenyiora and first-round draft pick Prince Amukamara. WRs Mario Manningham and Domenik Hixon also were sidelined. Hixon is out for the season. ... The Eagles didn't have defensive ends Darryl Tapp and Juqua Parker. ... The Eagles reshuffled all three of their starting linebackers this week, moving each one into a new spot. ... Vick lined up at receiver for one play with Ronnie Brown in the shotgun formation behind center. McCoy took the direct snap and ran 3 yards.

Florida in talks for 5th primary spot (Politico)

With a week to go before the Republican National Committee?s Oct. 1 deadline for states to schedule their primaries or caucuses, South Carolina officials are in conversations with the other early states who are working together to prevent others from leapfrogging them on the calendar ? and is working to help Florida go fifth in picking a presidential nominee.

South Carolina GOP chairman Chad Connelly has the exclusive authority to set South Carolina?s GOP primary date. After announcing that his state won?t share its spot on the calendar with Arizona ? which set off the calendar upheaval by moving its primary to Feb. 28, the same date that South Carolina is currently scheduled for ? or any other state, Connelly is looking to put the state?s vote on a Saturday earlier in February, South Carolina GOP spokesman Matt Moore said. That would keep the state ahead of Arizona while still complying with RNC rules.

And Nevada Republicans have formally tethered the Silver State caucus to New Hampshire?s first-in-the-nation primary, whenever that ends up taking place.

The early states are planning to announce new, earlier dates just before the deadline to keep other states from having time to move ahead of them. But in a new development, with Florida looking to move up its own primary again, Connelly is among those negotiating a deal aimed at moving up the Sunshine State?s vote, preserving South Carolina?s first-in-the-South status and keeping all the voting as far after New Year?s as possible.

?Given Florida?s stature, it was important to communicate with them as well,? Moore explained.

That could have its own complications: Gov. Rick Scott said Saturday on Fox News that he doesn?t want to share a primary spot, either.

?I believe the date will be some time in February,? Scott said. ?We want our own date.?

South Carolina appears to be on board with that plan.

?We expect Florida to be fifth in the process,? Moore said. ?We hope the other states follow the RNC rule. That?s the goal in all of this ? to make sure the primary calendar is not compressed.?

    That goal is increasingly fleeting.

US walks out as Iran delivers anti-US speech (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? American diplomats led a walkout at the U.N. General Assembly Thursday as Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad fiercely attacked the United States and major West European nations as "arrogant powers" ruled by greed and eager for military adventurism.

The two U.S. diplomats, who specialize in the Middle East, were followed out of the chamber by diplomats from more than 30 countries. They included the 27 European Union members, Australia, New Zealand, Somalia, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino and Macedonia, a U.N. diplomat said. Israel boycotted the speech.

Ahmadenijad's fiery anti-U.S. and anti-Israeli rhetoric has been a staple of the General Assembly's ministerial meetings.

Last year, Ahmadinejad provoked a walkout by the U.S., EU, and others when he said a majority of people in the United States and around the world believe the American government staged the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks in an attempt to assure Israel's survival.

The provocative comments prompted the U.S. delegation to walk out of Ahmadinejad's U.N. speech, where he also blamed the U.S. as the power behind U.N. Security Council sanctions against Iran for its refusal to halt uranium enrichment, a technology that can be used as fuel for electricity generation or to build nuclear weapons.

Ahmadinejad's speech pitted the poverty and unhappiness of most countries against the riches and power of the U.S. and unnamed European nations that he accused of perpetuating wars, causing the current global economic crisis and infringing on "the rights and sovereignty of nations."

He attacked the United States and European colonial powers for abducting tens of millions of Africans and making them slaves, for their readiness "to drop thousands of bombs on other countries," and for dominating the U.N. Security Council He singled out the U.S. for using a nuclear bomb against Japan in World War II and imposing and supporting military dictatorships and totalitarian regimes in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

"It is as lucid as daylight that the same slave masters and colonial powers that once instigated the two world wars have caused widespread misery and disorder with far-reaching effects across the globe since then," Ahmadinejad said. "Do these arrogant powers really have the competence and ability to run or govern the world?"

The Iranian president answered by calling for "the shared and collective management of the world in order to put an end to the present disorders, tyranny and discriminations worldwide." Last year, he said "the future belongs to Iran" and challenged the U.S. to accept that his country has a major role in the world.

Ahmadinejad made no mention of his disputed re-election in June 2009 when security forces systematically crushed opposition protests, the current internal political turmoil that has sharply diminished his power, or Iran's nuclear program which the U.S. and its allies believe is aimed at producing nuclear weapons.

"While President Ahmadinejad is lecturing the world from the U.N. podium," Human Rights Watch's U.N. Director Philippe Bolopion said, "dissent is still being crushed ruthlessly in Iran and basic rights demanded by millions in the Arab world are brutally denied to Iranians who are demanding the same."

"The world assembly should take with a grain of salt the remarks of a leader who said nothing about the public hanging yesterday of a 17-year-old in his own country," he said.

In his speech, Ahmadinejad noted "the widespread awakening in Islamic lands ... (in) the pursuit of the realization of justice, freedom and the creation of a better tomorrow." He said "our great nationa stands ready to join hands with other nations to march on this beautiful path."

The Iranian leader accused the U.S. of threatening to place sanctions on anyone who questions the Holocaust and the Sept. 11 attacks with sanctions and military action.

Without naming the United States, he asked: "Who imposed, through deceits and hypocrisy, the Zionism and over 60 years of war, homelessness, terror and mass murder on the Palestinian people and on countries in the region?"

Ahmadinejad accused some unidentified European countries of still using the Holocaust "as the excuse to pay fine or ransom to the Zionists." He also said any question about the foundation of Zionism is condemned by the U.S. "as an unforgivable sin."

Mark Kornblau, spokesman for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, said: "Mr. Ahmadinejad had a chance to address his own people's aspirations for freedom and dignity, but instead he again turned to abhorrent anti-Semitic slurs and despicable conspiracy theories."

When the idea of an independent fact-finding investigation of "the hidden elements" involved in the Sept. 11 attacks was raised last year, he said, "my country and myself came under pressure and threat by the government of the United States."

"Instead of assigning a fact-finding team, they killed the main perpetrator and threw his body into the sea," Ahmadinejad said, referring to the U.S. military's killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in early May.

"Would it not have been reasonable to bring to justice and openly to trial the main perpetrator of the incident in order to identify the elements behind the safe space provided for the invading aircraft to attack the twin world trade towers?," he asked.

    WikiLeaks chief Assange condemns memoir

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange lashed out at a British publisher for releasing drafts of a long-awaited memoir without his approval Thursday, saying he did not author the book or get the opportunity to check it.

British publisher Canongate announced that the book, billed as an "unauthorized autobiography," will go on sale in stores and online Thursday. Canongate ? which paid the 40-year-old Assange for the rights to the memoir last year ? said that Assange began working with a ghostwriter on the book, but later backed out and tried to cancel his contract.

The publisher said that since he had not repaid his advance, it had decided to publish the first draft that the WikiLeaks founder delivered to the publisher in March.

But in a statement released to The Associated Press, Assange disputed that account, accusing the publisher of "profiteering from an unfinished and erroneous draft."

"The events surrounding its unauthorised publication by Canongate are not about freedom of information ? they are about old-fashioned opportunism and duplicity ? screwing people over to make a buck," Assange said in the statement.

According to Assange, he did not give a copy of the 70,000-word manuscript, written by Andrew O'Hagan, to Canongate. Instead, it was handed over by O'Hagan's researcher "for viewing purposes only" and was never intended for publication, he said.

"This draft was a work in progress. It is entirely uncorrected or fact-checked by me," Assange said.

Although Assange said in the beginning he hoped his memoirs would be "one of the unifying documents of our generation," he later became doubtful and said that with the lawsuits against him he couldn't focus on writing.

In December, he said that he didn't want to write a book, but had been forced into the deal to pay his legal bills and keep WikiLeaks afloat. He said the deal would bring in $500,000 from Canongate and $800,000 from Knopf.

Assange said that in May he agreed with Canongate to draw up a new contract and restructure the book, but the publisher later ignored those discussions and kept its decision to publish the first draft a secret from him.

Canongate sold rights to more than 30 publishers around the world, including Alfred A. Knopf in the U.S.

Knopf, a division of Random House, said Wednesday that it had canceled its contract to publish the book.

"The author did not complete his work on the manuscript or deliver a book to us in accordance with our agreement," spokesman Paul Bogaards said in a statement. "We will not be moving forward with our publication."

WikiLeaks and its silver-haired frontman shot to worldwide prominence with a series of spectacular leaks of secret U.S. material, including the publication of about 250,000 classified State Department cables.

Assange has gained global fame as the face of WikiLeaks, but also has fallen out with many former allies, and with media partners, which had helped edit and publish the site's trove of secret documents.

Canongate said the book traces Assange's life from his Australian childhood through his time as a teenage computer hacker to the founding of the secret-spilling website.

It said the book is, "like its author, passionate, provocative and opinionated."

Canongate publishing director Nick Davies said the WikiLeaks chief should be pleased with the result.

"It's the good and the bad of Julian in there, which ultimately does him some favors," Davies said.

"He has been portrayed as this Bond villain or a character from a Stieg Larsson novel ... but what comes through here is this very human portrait of Julian, warts and all," he said. "He's a warmer character than a lot of people will be expecting."

The Independent newspaper, which will run extracts from the book starting Thursday, said the memoir also deals with events in Sweden in 2010 that led to allegations of rape and sexual molestation against Assange by two women.

Assange is out on bail and living at a supporter's mansion in eastern England as he awaits a judge's decision on whether he will be extradited to Sweden to face those allegations. A ruling is expected within weeks.

In addition to its attack on his one-time publishing partners, his statement provides a rare window into Assange's fraught financial position. In it Assange says that no lawyer would take his case because of lack of money, and hints that the bills ? and the strain ? are piling up.

"My legal costs are mounting due to politically motivated legal attacks and a financial blockade jeopardises WikiLeaks' continued operations," he said.

This large scale, first-of-a-kind study will be published in the November issue of Stroke

A new study published in the November 2011 issue of Stroke reveals some promising data on the positive effects of soy protein reducing the progression of clogged arteries in women who were within five years of menopause. This study was the largest and longest randomized controlled human study conducted to-date that directly investigated the efficacy of isolated soy protein consumption on the progression of atherosclerosis (lipid deposition in the artery walls).

"These results are consistent with what we have learned through research conducted over the past decade," said Howard N. Hodis, MD, USC Keck School of Medicine and lead author of the study. "The literature demonstrates that there is a 'window of opportunity' of a potential beneficial effect on coronary heart disease for products that bind to the estrogen receptor including hormone-replacement therapy, soybean isoflavones or selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) when initiated in women within 5-6 years of menopause."

The progression rate of carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) trended to be 16 percent lower on average in the isoflavone-containing soy protein group compared with the placebo group. However, in women who had experienced menopause within the past five years, isolated soy protein consumption was associated with a significant 68 percent reduction in CIMT progression compared to those consuming the placebo.

Excellent compliance was observed for this study as determined by package and bar count (86.5 percent for placebo and 91.0 percent for isolated soy protein). Compliance was confirmed by plasma and urine isoflavone measurements.

"The high compliance suggests that the clinical study products provided by Solae were very palatable and were not associated with any significant adverse effects as confirmed by the data," said Elaine Krul, PhD, nutrition discovery lead, Solae.

Subjects in this study were 'healthy' with no previous signs of cardiovascular disease which may explain the lack of significant reduction in plasma lipids that is seen in persons with higher plasma lipid levels.

"This study also showed a significant increase in HDL ("the good") cholesterol in participants consuming isolated soy protein," said Krul. "The results of this study reinforce that soy protein can provide health benefits for the healthy aging market segment."

The study was conducted between 2004 and 2009. It was a double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel-design study of 350 postmenopausal women aged 45-92 years without diagnosed diabetes or heart disease that were recruited in Greater Los Angeles.
